Bastard Swordsman Chapter 32

Lost Daily Life

“I caused trouble for everyone. It was because of my…inexperience and ignorance. I’m sorry.”

After returning to the guild and giving our report, Bridget bowed her head slightly.

The armor that had chilled her to the bone in the forest had somehow returned to normal temperature and she had put it back on, already prepared to return home anytime.

…Her stunned face when she got paid was something else huh. Really surprised her.

Bridget was probably conflicted between “Can I really take this?” and “I’m getting the full amount for this?” Of course, this job was so lame no one would take it.

But the reward amount itself was officially calculated, so it pains the heart.

Maybe enough for her to stay at a cheap inn and drink tasteless porridge.

“I will…return home and speak with my family again. I intend to think carefully about the job as well.”

“Do so… It would be good if you could choose a path suited for you.”

“Yes. Sheena, you helped me.”

Sheena smiled faintly.

Smiling like this at someone you deliberately led to frustration…what an actress. If it were me, I’d be crying while saying “I’m so sorry…!”

“It really was…unpleasant work.”

“I know right… “

“Poor thing…can’t be helped I guess.”

The only one looking unbothered was Nastasha. She had been listlessly picking at her nails the whole time.

Does she not have human feelings…?

“But you know, you don’t become an adventurer at that age. Since there’s good work available, normally you’d do your best there first. If it were my kid, I’d give them a smack.”

Well, certainly. Hearing Jona, a mother with a family, say that, I think it’s reasonable. That’s how parents would feel.

…Whether you can keep at it depends largely on your own mindset.

I want her to try her best with the seemingly tough job of a noble’s knight escort, even if she ends up unable to do it. Irresponsible thinking, but still.

“My my. Artemis’ work seems tough.”

Taking off my hat and unwrapping the bandages.

Covering my whole head suits winter well, but it feels off compared to normal.

“Mongrel senpai coming over to soak after this right?”

“Yeah. But first lemme stop by my inn. Gonna get some hot water and wipe myself down before coming.”

“…Huh? You’re getting in the bath right? Why wash yourself beforehand?”

“You don’t know, Ulrika? You gotta properly clean yourself before entering someone else’s bath.”

“…???”

“He’s stranger than I thought after hearing that.”

Hey Sheena, don’t say it like that.

And there’s various stuff I need to prepare too.

“Then let’s break up here. I’ll head back to the clan house first. I’ll get the bath ready.”

“Thanks. See ya later then.”

And with that, the boring and tough time is over.

I’ll enjoy a tub filled with hot water after so long to the fullest!

“So yeah, I’ve come to borrow the bath!”

“That was fast! Did you run here!?”

“Too excited so I ran.”

“You washed at the inn then ran here to work up a sweat…well, don’t need to answer but…”

Raina was fletching arrows in front of the Artemis clan house. She should just go inside since it’s already dark.

“Ms. Nastashaaa, Mongrel senpai is here!”

“Quick. Can you show him over here?”

“Yup!”

Walking down the hall to the end, there was a room with a “Bath” sign.

Flames swaying BoBoBo could be heard from inside. Seems Nastasha is here.

“The changing room is inside, the bath’s beyond that. I know clean freak Mongrel senpai isn’t worried, but please use it without making a mess.”

“I know, I know. Brought amenities and stuff, won’t slip up.”

“Ameni…? Well, I guess so. Then I’ll leave it to Ms. Nastasha.”

Seeing Raina run busily down the hall warmed me for some reason.

Wish I had a manager like her in my past life. Though I wasn’t in any clubs.

“Pardon the intrusio—whoa, lotta steam.”

“Welcome, Mongrel. I’ve already heated the water, just get in. …I didn’t intend to let anyone besides party members in though.”

The bath exceeded my expectations in good ways.

First, it wasn’t small like a drum can bath. Shockingly, it had the same long shape as a modern household bathtub, barely letting you stretch your legs out.

And it was stone, not metal. Damn. Gets me excited like an open-air bath.

“…This metal thing embedded in the tub wall is…”

“That? It’s a heating mechanism I developed for magic users…or something like that.”

“You developed it!?”

Seeing my shock, Nastasha twisted her mouth smugly.

“It’s to efficiently transfer the heat of fire magic I generate inside to the tub water…With my skill, just heating it exhausts my mana. When I don’t have leeway, I throw in heated stones to supplement it.”

“No way…that’s amazing. What an invention.”

“…Hmph. I’m no Count Chaos. A tool only usable by fire mages can’t be sold after all.”

Nastasha’s sleeves were dripping wet. Getting it heated inevitably gets you wet. Probably from operating the mechanism attached to the tub wall.

But being able to heat a bath alone makes it an amazing invention to me.

Maybe you should just be Count Chaos at this point huh?

“Now then, my work here is done for now. Enjoy yourself slowly. …Mongrel, you saved me today. Let me thank you.”

“Don’t worry about it, I should be thanking you. Thanks, Nastasha.”

I rummaged through my luggage and took out a ceramic bottle.

“…Mongrel, what’s that?”

“It’s cold ale to drink while soaking.”

“…”

“And this bottle is chilled milk to drink after the bath.”

Nastasha quietly stifled her laughter, then after a pause forced out an unconvincing wry smile.

“I’m glad you’re enjoying it. Just don’t drown in there while drinking.”

“Of course.”

Saying that, she left the changing room.

Leaving just me alone.

…It’s been so long since a warm bath.

“…!”

Guts pose. Then super speed undressing.

After washing my body and head in the tub water several times…plop.

“Ahhhhh…”

My whole body was wrapped in heat, and fine wounds on my skin I didn’t consciously notice until now stung.

You could say it’s painful. But this was precisely the pleasant kind of pain.

This feeling of something I couldn’t wipe away with tub water melting into the bathwater.

And the winter chill I feel on my face.

Everything I feel on my whole body is nostalgic, bringing me to tears.

Acting like I’m taking a swig, I let out a vulgar sigh.

“Mmn…the ale’s weak…”

There don’t seem to be hot springs in this country. At least not from what I could find.

If there are any, it’d be in the Union or Holy Kingdom…way beyond my scope. I don’t even know if they exist.

I can get by with food with some ingenuity. For just my own clothes, I can fudge it.

For just lodging, it’s not that hard to manage.

But baths. Just this that I took for granted in my past life had far too different value and significance.

The barrier of water and fuel is so high.

Yet now, somehow I’m soaking in this tub.

“Wanna go home…”

I let out a pathetic voice I absolutely never do, melted by the warm water.

This should undoubtedly be a blissful moment.
