“Al, Ray. Next, to the left!”
I immediately pointed to the left. Although we quickly dealt with the heavy infantry, a group of cavalry was charging at us from the left.
There were only a hundred of them, but the few at the front were wearing red armor, a mark of elite troops.
The Rome squad quickly formed ranks, but we didn’t charge yet. First, Al and Ray moved forward.
From the Demon King’s cavalry, a demon wielding a large cross spear charged. Al swung his spear, and flames burst from its tip, the heat hitting my cheeks.
The sudden fire startled the cavalry, causing them to halt.
Though the flames seemed large, they weren’t very powerful. Their purpose was to stop the enemy and obscure their vision.
As the flames burst forth, Ray, beside Al, kicked his horse and leaped, gliding through the air on the wind.
Of course, he couldn’t fly like a bird with just a jump. It was Ray’s wind magic.
He created air currents around him, catching the wind with his specially designed mantle reinforced with a framework.
Ray, circling in the sky, targeted the demon and dove down with his spear ready. He looked like a raptor descending on its prey.
The demon with the cross spear, surprised by the flames, didn’t notice the attack from above and was instantly killed as Ray’s spear pierced through its helmet and head.
The Demon King’s cavalry, still stunned by the aerial assault, thrust their spears at Ray.
Three spears converged on Ray, but before they could impale him, he kicked off the demon he’d just slain and leaped again, soaring through the air.
The Demon King’s army, shocked by Ray’s bird-like flight, cried out in surprise. It seemed even they had no one who could fly.
Ray, dominating the sky, landed on the heads of the enemies, piercing their heads and chests as he went.
Ray’s aerial attacks were a rare sight on the battlefield, drawing the Demon King’s army’s attention upward, which Al’s spear then exploited.
The elite of the Demon King’s army tried to block Al’s attacks but were blinded by the flames from his spear.
A demon’s reptilian face was briefly engulfed in flames. The fire didn’t have the power to burn them to death, but it temporarily blinded them. Al took this moment to return his spear, piercing the demon’s thigh.
The elite demon, unfazed by such a wound, readied his spear. But the wound Al inflicted glowed red and black, burning like embers.
As the demon tried to strike back, flames suddenly burst from the wound, engulfing and burning the demon to death.
This was the power of Al’s flaming spear [Fiery Spear]. If it pierced, it became a deadly magic spear.
Al swung his flame-spewing spear, piercing the red-armored demons’ shoulders and legs one after another.
With [Fiery Spear] and Ray’s aerial attacks, not even the elite of the Demon King’s army could match them.
Having defeated the red-armored elites, the Rome squad and the Cashew defense squad launched an assault. I entrusted the enemy to Al and the others, raised my flag high, and waved it vigorously for visibility.
Looking around, the Demon King’s army was recovering from the chaos and moving to surround us.
The breach made by the Cashew defense squad was being closed. If this continued, we’d be like rats in a trap—or rather, mice swallowed by a dragon. No matter how strong the Rome squad was, we’d eventually be crushed from all sides.
Please, come quickly.
I silently prayed, raising and lowering the flag repeatedly. After several times, I looked towards the surrounding forest. …Nothing happened!
While maintaining a calm exterior, I was internally agitated.
“Captain Rome!”
Noticing the lack of response to my signal, Al looked at me, asking what to do with his eyes.
As I was about to grit my teeth and devise a countermeasure, drums and gongs sounded from the surrounding forest, and four thousand infantry appeared.
They were the forces of the lords who supported the military alliance I had formed, known as the Romelia Alliance.
The four thousand soldiers of the allied forces surrounded the Demon King’s army and launched a simultaneous attack from behind.
The Demon King’s army, distracted by us, was completely caught off guard by the sudden appearance of the allied forces.
“Now, let’s wreak havoc! Gran and Ragn, Otto and Kyle, lead three hundred infantry and form a formation here! Ben and Bry, take the northern enemy. Glen and Hans, head east. Tars and Say, move west! Zeze and Ginny, southeast, and Borel and Gutt, southwest! Lead a hundred infantry each and advance!”
I ordered the Rome squad members to establish positions within the enemy.
We were mice trapped by the Demon King’s army, but the allied forces were now encircling them.
If the Demon King’s army tried to attack us, the allied forces would strike. If they dealt with the allied forces, we would press from within. Though we were mice swallowed by a dragon, we would become mice that devour the dragon from within.
The Romé Squad sprang into action at the command.
The massive Otto and the nimble Kyle held the center of the battlefield. The spear masters and commanders, twins Gran and Lagun, took charge of the flanks.
Ben and Bry, nearly as large as Otto, moved with powerful steadiness.
Glenn, driven by a rivalry with Al, was a bit reckless, but with the calm and perceptive Hans, they felt secure.
Sei was serious but sometimes rigid, balanced perfectly by the easygoing and carefree Thars.
The always cheerful Zeze moved ahead energetically, followed closely by the taciturn Ginny.
Gut was eager to prove himself on the battlefield, supported by Borel, his countryman and a caring older brother figure.
With the Romé Squad, also known as the “Twenty Knights of Romelia,” they could fight even in the heart of enemy territory.
However, the name “Twenty Knights” was misleading. Originally twenty, the Romé Squad had lost one member in battle and three had been forced to withdraw. The memory of the fallen Mitya still pained them, but they had to fight on for his sake.
“Al! Ray! We’re moving out too!”
“Oh dear, Captain Romé. The battle’s practically won, and you still want to go?”
Al responded in a weary voice.
“Of course. The allied forces are fighting hard. As the ones who formed this alliance, we must fight to the end.”
Considering the effect of [Grace], the victory seemed certain. But anything could happen on the battlefield. They needed to cut through the enemy’s core to secure their triumph.
“Did you hear that, everyone? Captain Romé wants more blood! Spill it all!”
Al shouted, raising his spear.
Though I hadn’t said such a thing, the soldiers rallied around Al’s call with renewed fervor.
Satisfied with the rise in morale, I sighed and spurred my horse onward.

Even though the outcome of the battle was decided, the Demon Lord’s army continued to resist to the last, and the battle was over by nightfall.
The blood-soaked ground turned even redder under the setting sun, resembling a hill made of blood.
Though the fight was over, my work was just beginning.
“Al, select half of those with the least injuries to finish off the remaining demons. Ray, take care of the wounded. And although it might be redundant to say this now…”
“Watch out for any surviving demons, right?”
Al finished my sentence.
“If you understand, that’s fine. Don’t get killed now that we’ve won.”
“Of course, Captain Romé.”
“Understood, Captain. I’ll handle the wounded.”
Al and Ray bowed and set off to their tasks.
After seeing them off, I looked around. A line of horses, burdened with supplies, had arrived at Polvic. It was the supply unit left behind with the Cashew Defense Force before the battle. They carried not only weapons and food but also medical supplies and many [Healers] with the power to mend wounds. Their help was crucial for post-battle efforts.
As I watched the supply unit, I saw a young woman in a black nun’s habit running towards me from the group unpacking the supplies. It was Mia, one of the healers.
“Ah, Mia, be careful. There’s a dip there…”
I tried to warn her, but it was too late. Mia tripped and fell headfirst into the ground.
I winced and closed one eye. Mia looked pained for a moment but quickly got up and looked at me.
“Lady Romelia, are you hurt?”
“No, I’m less injured than you, Mia.”
I lightly dusted off Mia’s clothes, removing dirt and leaves. She had scraped her knee. She seemed like a child.
“Are you okay? Come on, Mia, heal yourself.”
“No, this isn’t even an injury. I need to heal as many people as I can first.”
Mia prioritized the wounded soldiers over her own injury.
“Alright, but make sure you treat yourself later. Now, where is Karlman?”
I asked about Mia’s senior, Karlman.
Karlman was in charge of the healers. The efficiency of treating the wounded depended on him.
“Senior Karlman has already started setting up a temporary clinic for the wounded. He plans to begin treatment as soon as they are brought in.”
Mia informed me that Karlman was already at work.
“Well then, Lady Romelia, I will also tend to the wounded.”
Mia bowed and left. A man with messy hair, a scruffy beard, and a dirty green robe approached me as she departed. Despite his shabby appearance, he was our army’s renowned strategist and my mentor, Welly.
“Thank you for your hard work, sir. Thanks to you, we arrived before Polvic fell.”
I expressed my gratitude to Welly.
“This time was tough. When I was told to cut ten days off the schedule, I didn’t know what to do.”
Welly patted his shoulder, looking utterly exhausted.
When Polvic called for help, we were far away. To make it in time, I ordered an unprecedented forced march, which would not have been possible under normal circumstances.
Supporting this grueling march was our brilliant strategist, Welly.
Many envision strategists as planners who trap enemies with clever schemes, but their real strength shines before the war begins.
