Prologue
“The infinite expanse of the vast universe…” While remembering this phrase from classical works of the Common Era, Kaito Crouch looked up at the alien civilization’s creation before him.
A spaceship. And a personal one at that.
He wondered how much wealth would be needed to arrange something like this on Earth. But here, it wasn’t that expensive. Being told that it was a relatively commonly attainable asset, he could only be amazed at the magnificence of the alien civilization that had picked him up.
This ship didn’t have a name yet. It had just been completed moments ago in this shipyard where human forms were barely visible. It wasn’t that everything was automated, nor was it empty. Machine intelligences, indistinguishable from their surroundings, were constantly moving about.
The hull was colored yellow and black. He hadn’t been particularly particular about the coloring, but somehow it felt right.
Calming his excited heart, he gazed at the ship where he would likely spend most of his future life. This ship, adjusted for him, along with his companion standing next to him, would be important friends coloring his life brilliantly from now on.
Classification-wise, this was considered a small ship. It was designed to be operated by one to three people.
The pilot’s seat was in front, living space in the back. Not only was it capable of combat operations, but it could also move at speeds approaching light speed, and was even equipped with barriers to protect the hull from incoming obstacles. Talk about having everything you need.
There was nothing like glass on the front. Yet you could clearly see outside from within—quite impressive. The front was designed like a ship’s bow.

“Master Kaito. I’ve configured the living quarters’ design.”
“That’s helpful.”
The sides and rear were also smooth, with no visible components. It reminded him of the designs of outer space ships that had been rumored since ancient times. Not unlike those unidentified flying objects, as they were called. He dismissed this thought as coincidence. With their level of technology, it would be far too easy for them to visit Earth without being detected at all. Kaito was convinced, even from his relatively brief association with them, that they wouldn’t make such amateur mistakes as to be discovered by Earthlings.
“You know, just looking at this shape, it doesn’t seem like it could move.”
“It’s mysterious, isn’t it? To think this will fly through space.”
Looking like nothing more than a colorful object—after all, there were no visible propulsion parts or weapon-like components on the surface.
The ship’s propulsion mechanism and its method of supplying energy to the interior would have made the old Kaito laugh in derision.
In a sense, it was powered by human will. A mysterious mechanism that could be moved just by thinking about it, by one’s will alone. It could move faster than light and achieve movements that seemed to ignore the laws of physics.
But now he couldn’t laugh at it. After all, this was what he had wished for himself.
“Master, what would you like to do with this ship?”
“Well… Since I’ve been given this life, it might be interesting to travel around and see various parts of the galaxy.”
Kaito’s Earth had perished. The cause was unknown.
Kaito, who had been in space at the time, chose to head as far away as possible as the last Earthling, rather than return to an Earth society that was waiting only for collapse.
And then he met the agents of the Federation, which held vast territory in the galaxy.
They took a liking to him, and he obtained Federation citizenship.
Now he had come to possess a ship with performance far beyond what Earth technology could have imagined.
“Still… a lot has happened, hasn’t it?”
“Indeed.”
From leaving Earth until today, it had been tumultuous days that would sound ridiculous to speak of. Kaito was remembering the days leading up to this moment, as if watching scenes from his life flash before his eyes.
