Bastard Swordsman Chapter 54 part 1

Aged Whiskey And Lewd Tale Battle Round Two

Whiskey was limited to one glass per person. The lament came from the whiskey-loving drunks. It’s understandable they longed for the invigorating alcohol kick that beer couldn’t provide.

But good news was brought in from outside.

One of the newly arrived guildsmen said, “They were distributing it over in the square too.”

“That’s an option!”

“We have no choice but to go!”

“We’ll line up and snatch it if we have to!”

With that, a portion of the guild members trickled back to the festival.

Indeed, the town crier had mentioned the “alcohol distribution at various locations,” so they must have been handing out drinks at different spots besides the guild.

In other words, the drunks intended to take advantage of the one-per-location policy at each venue. Going out when it’s probably crazy crowded out there, gotta give them credit. Can’t say I don’t understand the feeling, though.

“Oh, Mongrel! Long time no see.”

“Ah, Caspar! It has been a while. Fancy meeting you at the guild.”

Amidst the constant flow of people, there was the healer Caspar from the Legol Security Force.

With it being a festival, even the uncle-types who rarely show their faces were present. And there were some unfamiliar young faces too.

“I thought I’d come drink with my subordinate Yukes for a change…”

“Ah, hello. I’m Yukes.”

“Oh, Caspar’s underling, right? I’ve heard of you. I’m Mongrel. We may not cross paths much, but nice to meet you. These are Artemis’ Raina and Ulrika.”

“Yo, I’m the archer Raina.”

“Same, archer Ulrika here. Pleased to meet ya!”

“N-nice to meet you too!”

Pretty young, huh. But it’s reassuring to have such youths working as healers.

In this world, you can never have too many healers. It’s a shame the aptitude requirements are stricter than even mages. If we had enough, we wouldn’t need to invent medicine – that’s how convenient the ability is.

“Apparently there will be many people feeling unwell from overdrinking this year…You all should be careful not to overdo it too, alright?”

“Of course, of course. We’ll exercise moderation…Oh, say, are you and Yukes on duty today, Caspar?”

Taking a closer look, they were wearing the Legol Security Force uniforms – very much on-the-job attire.

“We’re currently on break, you could say. But we’ll need to be at our posts tonight, prepared for any emergencies…These are the busy times for us…”

“…Thank you for your service.”

We three bowed our heads, and Caspar gave a thin, knowing smile before taking a sip of beer.

…He’s working, but also drinking a bit – so very fitting for this other world. Unimaginable back in my previous life.

“Woohoo, drank and drank! Long live Lord Legol! Long live Lord Chaos!”

“I had doubts when the current lord inherited, but…he’s the best ruler!”

“Wonder when that liquor’s going on sale…”

“But it’ll probably only be for nobles? Depending on the price—”

As we chatted, the drunks who had been outside returned.

Apparently they’d successfully obtained the whiskey being distributed out there, as they seemed to be in high spirits. A tinge of envy.

“…Hmm. Those glass bottles contained sticks of some sort. I theorize those are what give the so-called whiskey its distinct flavor.”

“Nastasha, I agree with that assessment. While the wording may not be apt, that scorched aroma we sensed amidst the concentrated spirits – it must be the essence extracted by charring wood over fire. Or perhaps it was aged in barrels made of similar material…”

“Has Sally had anything like that before?”

“Hmm, not me. We have honey wine, milk wine, all sorts…but never a spirit that potent. Sheena would know more about premium stuff than me.”

“I’ve never seen nor heard of anything like it. As the lord said, it must certainly be a new invention.”

“While it’s not the first time Lord Chaos has backed the lord…Hmm. Intriguing…”

The Gold ranks really are quite sharp.

Whiskey does traditionally get its flavor from charred oak barrels, but this time they’ve also added charred wooden sticks into the barrels. Increasing the charred surface area enhances the flavoring process. They even sold whiskey flavor sticks for home-aging back in my previous world.

Of course, that alone doesn’t fix the roughness of the base spirit…but still, I’m glad I got to try this powerful drink.

“…I might buy that liquor when it goes on sale too…Wonder how much it’ll cost?”

“Raina, you can really hold your liquor, huh? Better than me, probably.”

“Yeah, we’re all pretty strong, ain’tcha?”

“Now that you mention it, I’ve never seen Raina drunk.”

“What if the whiskey costs like, 1000 Zeni a glass? You’d still buy it?”

“…”

“Oi Raina? That’s a serious face…planning to buy it no matter what, huh?”

Already showing signs of being a hardcore drinker in her teens, huh…

…Maybe we should develop some more spirits and liquors. As an agricultural nation’s export, distilled spirits pack quite a punch. Could even be used for disinfecting, maybe. Just gotta watch out for the health hazards…

“Oiiiii! Our very own Dick Vault became Legol’s Bravest in the arm wrestling tourney!”

As the sun set, the security personnel headed off to work while more guild patrons started trickling in to take their place.

The “Swords of the Harvest” crew, including Chuck, finally made their appearance after being unseen until now.

“Woah, awesome! As expected of Dick Vault!”

“Gotta be one of us guildsmen to be the arm-wrestling champ, amirite!?”

“Bravo!”

Among them was the big, brawny Dick Vault.

Apparently he had won the town’s annual arm wrestling tournament to decide the bravest.

Surrounded by his party members showering him with praise, he certainly looked every bit the leader of Legol’s most illustrious party at present.

…Wait, taking a closer look, Barlgar’s there too at the very back. Drunk off his ass and stumbling around…Must’ve been boozing this whole time, that lush.

“…I lost…”

And behind even Barlgar was the dejected-looking Goriliana.

“What’s wrong, Senpai Goriliana?”

“You okay? Something happen?”

“No…I merely lost to Dick Vault in the finals. I was utterly outmatched in strength…”

So the finals pitted Dick Vault against Goriliana, huh? To even make it that far against the crazy strong Gold rank Dick Vault…

Gonna have to be real careful about disrespecting Goriliana from now on…

“Welcome back, Goriliana. That’s too bad, but you did very well to make it to second place.”

“Sheena…I’m sorry, I gave it my all but…”

“Don’t worry about it. As a party member, I’m proud you made it that far.”

“…Thank you.”

Ah right, the arm wrestling tourney. It’s an annual thing, but I usually get bored of walking around and hole up at the tavern before it gets this late into the night.

The spirit festival doesn’t really kick into full swing until nightfall when the moon’s out, after all. Always ends up being too much hassle to stay out that late.

“So y’see, the winner of this year’s arm wrestling got a deluxe prize—our man Dick Vault won himself…this very bottle of liquor! You guys all know what it is by now, right!?”

“No way…!”

“It can’t be!?”

Chuck was holding up a bottle of liquor.

The tinted glass obscured the contents, but there was no mistaking it…!

“The new spirit created by Lord Legol himself – whiskey!”

“Woohoo! Dick Vault, you madman!”

“What a beast…!”

“–Indeed. I am honored to be acknowledged as this town’s mightiest by winning this prize. Thank you, everyone. However–this joy should not be mine alone to indulge in. ‘Tis the spirit festival tonight–I shall share this fine spirit and celebrate with my fellow guildsmen.”

“Yeahhhh!”

N-No way! The prize was a bottle of whiskey!?

Smaller than the bottles distributed earlier, but still – an unreleased liquor. Offering to share such a prize showed Dick Vault’s manly generosity, whipping the guild’s drunks into a frenzy.

“Dick Vault, you legend!”

“Amazing! Awesome! Fantastic!”

I was on my feet applauding right alongside Raina.

Well, what did you expect? We wanted more whiskey, dammit.

“But y’see…as awesome as sharing is, ain’t enough to go around for everyone, ya dig? So we gotta decide who gets it by…holding some kinda game to find a ‘winner’, don’tcha think!?”

“Here it comes!”

“You’re really going there, Chuck? Gonna start it up!?”

“You know it! At Dick Vault’s own suggestion, I hereby declare the start of: The Second Lewd Tale Battle : Aged Whiskey !”

“Yeahhhhhh!”

An unusual fervor seized the guild, filled with boorish male cheering.

The minstrel maliciously strummed up a frenzied tune, Barlgar leapt about drunkenly crashing into walls, Chuck kicked off his shoes and stood atop a table. Well, at least he took his boots off. Still rude, though.

…Oh, the ladies are giving us cold looks…
