The first five boxes contained nothing but spoiled provisions. But when I opened the next container, I found a clear plastic tank filled with water.
“Sario, it’s water!”
“Really?”
Sario quickly came over to check. Inside the container, we found about 900 liters of water, stored in separate transparent tanks. Water stored in shelters like this was permanent emergency water, meaning it contained no impurities that could cause spoilage—allowing it to last indefinitely.
“It’s a relief. I was worried since we only had the water stored in the small spacecraft.”
We kept opening the boxes and discovered about six tons of water. When we asked Sario, he confirmed that we had secured enough water for the time being. Besides water, this shelter also contained brand-new information terminals. Well, they were brand-new a long time ago, but surprisingly, they were still intact and functional. As expected of a civilization with a Level C technology rating.
Those devices are called glasses-type terminals or smart glasses. When worn on the face, information is displayed on the lenses in front of the eyes. To operate them, it seems one must use abbreviated language along with eye direction and glove-type controllers. I don’t know how to use them, but Sario and I each secure one.
There are smart glasses on Earth too, but with those alone only simple functions can be executed. To do complex tasks, it’s necessary to connect them via communication lines to smartphones, computers, game consoles and such. On the other hand, the ones made by the Anubis tribe, have performance exceeding high-functioning computers with the smart glasses alone, and can apparently execute various functions. They don’t have nose pads or temples to hook over the ears. Instead, the lenses on the left and right are connected by a bridge with suction cups that adhere to the space between the eyebrows when worn. There’s no time, so I decided to have Sario teach me how to use them later. While continuing to examine the storage boxes, Sario discovered something.
“Ah!”
“What is it?”
“I found a food manufacturing device.”
Hearing that, I was overjoyed. This brought us one step closer to freedom. But a food manufacturing device presumably requires some kind of material. It can’t produce food with just the device alone.
“Isn’t that amazing? What kind of food can that manufacturing device make?”
“Preserved food tubes.”
My shoulders slumped. Those preserved food tubes were exactly what I didn’t want to eat.
“But how do we get the materials for the preserved food tubes?”
“This manufacturing device is also called a monster processing device. The materials are space jellyfish and space clione.”
Hearing those were the materials, my excitement instantly deflated. I had no idea monsters could be used as food ingredients. Since there are space clione nearby, we should be able to defeat them and use them as food ingredients. But…preserved food tubes?
After that, we continued searching inside the shelter and found clothes and daily necessities. We secured everything that looked usable. We took the water and food manufacturing device to the hangar where the small spacecraft was located. Maintenance robots were servicing the small spacecraft in the hangar, but it looked like it would be ready in another day. Sario received a report from the maintenance robots and explained that the ultra-compact nuclear fusion reactor and small plasma engines didn’t seem to have any issues. The air recycling and purification system had a minor problem, but they were able to repair it. By the way, this ultra-compact nuclear fusion reactor runs on just heavy hydrogen.
We also searched around the spaceport looking for food, but couldn’t find any, so we returned to the small spacecraft. After that, we powered up the ultra-compact nuclear fusion reactor that had completed its check. We were relieved it started up successfully. The maintenance robots were also electrically powered, so it was fortunate the ultra-compact nuclear fusion reactor was operational before their batteries ran out. The air recycling and purification system also started up, allowing us to take off our power suits and spacesuits to live inside the small spacecraft. Sario and I took off our spacesuits for the first time in a while and relaxed, wearing clothes we found in the shelter.
“As I mentioned before, with this small spacecraft we cannot travel to other star systems.”
I already knew that. This is an interplanetary spacecraft, not an interstellar one, so it cannot travel at superluminal speeds.
“So how are we going to escape from this planet?”
“I don’t know yet. But I think there’s a chance.”
Sario doesn’t lie. It must be true, but I felt uneasy. After that, we continued searching the spaceport and transporting anything useful to the small spacecraft, including propellant for the plasma engines and spacesuits. The spacesuits made by Anubis had better performance than the Goblin-made power suits, although they couldn’t be used for combat.
With the small spacecraft’s power restored, Sario ran the self-check program for the electronic systems. There didn’t seem to be any issues, so we booted up the control computer for the spacecraft. At that time, we registered ourselves as crew members of the ship. Of course there was security, but it was an older type that Sario was able to override.

A few days had passed since we were abandoned by the Goblins. During that time, we only had water and nothing to eat.
“Let’s go hunt space clione.”
We put on our power suits and headed to that spacecraft berth. Going through the air ducts, we reached the exit to the berth and peeked inside. In the large berth, two space clione floated about. There didn’t seem to be any Goblins present. I checked the remaining ammo. Only fourteen shots left. Since it’s precious ammunition, I need to use it carefully. Sario and I discussed and decided to take down one space clione each.
When the two of us jumped out into the berth, the space clione immediately noticed and came toward us. Their way of flying was similar to sea jellyfsh. It seems they inflate their entire bodies, then expel gas from the rear to propel themselves forward. The space clione split off coming at each of us separately.
Observing the one coming toward me, I could see it was about 8 meters wide with a red nucleus in the center. I’ll take it down in one shot. To do that, I need to lure it in close. Calmly waiting for the huge monster to approach takes courage. My heart was pounding and my breathing quickened. When it got close enough that we were almost touching, I pulled the trigger. The explosive shell burrowed into the space clione’s body and struck the nucleus, causing it to detonate. It seems I was able to destroy the core with a single aimed shot as intended.
Sario, who had split off to hunt separately, appeared to have taken his down in two shots. We called over a maintenance robot to help disassemble the space clione carcasses and transport them to the small spacecraft. The monster processing device we loaded onto the small spacecraft came with a large supply of empty tubes included. Using the space clione remains as ingredients, we were able to mass produce preserved food tubes – 3,000 portions worth. Eating two per day, that’s enough for the two of us for 750 days. The thought of having to keep eating these for over two years made me feel dizzy.
“With this, we won’t have to worry about food for about two years.”
“I absolutely don’t want to keep eating these things for over two years.”
I voiced my honest feelings. Hearing that, Sario laughed.
“It’s not funny. Isn’t there any delicious monster meat or something?”
“The monsters in space mostly taste bad. But apparently some monsters that have settled on planets can have delicious meat.”
It seems to eat delicious monster meat, we’d need to go to some planet.
That day, the leader of the scouting party, Valbo, hurriedly returned. Seeing this, Boblo, the captain of the 2nd class scouting ship Gyogal, summoned Valbo to give his report.
“I had ordered you to exterminate the space clione. Why have you returned alone?”
“Captain, everyone in my unit is dead. We fought desperately but there was nothing I could do alone, so I retreated.”
“Tch, inferior lowclass subordinate soldiers are useless as expected. Can’t be helped, I’ll send the mobile space corps as replacements.”
Captain Boblo used the mobile space corps to wipe out the space clione. However, that was only temporary, and unless the spaceport was fully repaired, there was no way to stop the space clione from invading.
Around that time, the war with the Orcs intensified, so exploring the spaceport was put on the back burner. The scouting ship Gyogal left the vicinity of the spaceport and headed for the front lines.
