A Story of a Cannon Fodder Volume 4 Chapter 3 part 3

“Oh my? Oh my, my, my? You are… dear Fei?”

Standing there was a beautiful woman with golden hair tied in a ponytail and crimson eyes like blood. Her figure rivaled—or even surpassed—Alicia’s.

Her elegant voice drew closer to Fei. She had no interest in Alicia whatsoever.

“…Mordred.”

“My, my! To think you remembered little old me—I’m touched♪ It’s been far too long, dear Fei♪”

Mordred, who had once clashed fiercely with Fei in the underground facility of Point Town, had reappeared before him again—fate worked in mysterious ways.

“Who’s this? An acquaintance?”

“…From before.”

“You’ve grown vastly stronger since then, haven’t you? It makes my blood boil♪ As much as I’d love to duel you right here… forgive me. dear Fei, that will have to wait for another time.”

“……”

“Fufu, ahh, what a shame♪ To think I won’t get a taste of your scorching gaze, your searing battle aura… Oh, dear Fei, you’re simply dying for a rematch with me, aren’t you♪ How cruel♪”

“I haven’t forgotten the humiliation from last time. I could settle it here and now… but it seems you’re not in the mood.”

“Indeed. Until I fulfill my reason for being here, I cannot cross blades with you.”

“…Fine. Then I’ll crush you—thoroughly, from the depths of my soul—when the time comes.”

“—Hah! Ahh, wonderful♪ As expected, dear Fei, you truly are my destined one♪”

Mordred exhaled heavily, her breath ragged with excitement, her face flushed with ecstasy as she gazed at Fei. Alicia couldn’t help but recoil.

(Huh? Seriously? What the hell is wrong with her…?)

“Perfect timing, dear Fei. Do you happen to know anything about the murders causing such a stir since this morning? I’ve come here to kill the culprit.”

“…I know nothing.”

“Is that so…?”

Mordred’s words were anything but trivial to Alicia.

(This woman… is she connected to the killer?)

(If I can get intel no one else has and catch the culprit… maybe everyone will finally acknowledge me. That’s it! I only ran to the dungeon this morning to escape the suffocating tension in the city, but if I catch the killer, I’ll be a hero!)

Unable to resist, Alicia spoke up.

“Hey, you… do you know the killer?”

“…Hm? Oh my, was there someone else here besides dear Fei? Wherever did you come from?”

“I’ve been here the whole time!”

“My, my, my! I hadn’t noticed at all. My eyes were only on dear Fei. As for whether I know the killer… well, yes, I do.”

“What’s your connection?”

“Why do you ask?”

“I can’t just ignore this. People are dead. If you know something, tell me.”

There was a sliver of sincerity in her words. Like Tru, Alicia had a sense of justice buried beneath her craving for recognition. At her core, she was good—even if that goodness often led her into trouble.

“Sigh… I doubt you’d understand, but… very well. You could call it a [Synchronization of Light].”

“Synchronization of Light…? What’s that?”

“Well… it’s a long story, but… no, forget I mentioned it. It’s not something to discuss lightly. Besides, you have the face of someone who’d recklessly meddle in things beyond you.”

“…What’s that supposed to mean?!”

“Exactly that face♪ Now then, I’ll be scouring the dungeon for the killer. dear Fei, do be careful. My…I know a guy who knows …… quite the troublesome man. He tends to move at night, so I’d recommend returning to your inn early.”

“……”

“Well then.”

With that, she walked past them. This was originally an event where Mordred and Alicia would meet and exchange a few words. The brief mention of [Synchronization of Light]—Mordred knew this was the killer.

Though warned not to get involved, Alicia’s mix of goodwill and self-interest would forge a one-way ticket to tragedy—an opening act to disaster.

—And fate, ever ironic, had already printed that ticket.

(If he moves at night… then I’ll keep watch over the city!)

She would follow that path. Board the train to tragedy.

(—Wait, isn’t this supposed to be the protagonist’s event? Oh well. That’s why I’ve been scouring the dungeon meticulously for the killer’s location… So he moves at night? I’ll be on the city guard shift then. But for now, I’ll keep searching the dungeon.)

And so, another man stamped his passport. A bullet train toward despair.

Fei remained in the dungeon late into the night, as if searching for something. His relentless, almost inhuman focus left Alicia speechless.

Finally, long after dark, the two emerged.

“You’re way too late! This is ridiculous! Training freak!”

“You could’ve gone back alone if you had complaints.”

“W-well…! After watching you push yourself like that, how could I— I mean, I just couldn’t say anything!”

The night was pitch-black and eerily silent. Perhaps due to yesterday’s murders, not even the usual drunken revelry could be heard.

“Alright, look—you should head back.”

“…I’ll patrol the city.”

“Hah?! Are you serious?! That Mordred woman said the killer’s probably in the city, moving at night!”

“Exactly. I’ll catch him.”

“…I won’t stop you.”

(Maybe I should go too… It’s scary alone.)

“You there!”

“Eh? Uh, yes?”

“What are you doing out at this hour? Return to your inn at once! Don’t you know about the murders?”

“W-well, um—”

“If this is some couple’s dare, value your lives more!”

“We’re not a couple!”

The armored man who’d addressed them had a beard and an air of stern justice.

“You know we’ve been patrolling the city since morning. The killer’s still at large… Between us, more bodies have been found. Some search team members were killed.”

“No way…”

“Even elite legion members were among them… This foe is dangerous. I hate to say it, but more will die. Stay in your inn. Lie low and wait for this to blow over.”

“…Understood.”

“Good. Now, I must go.”

Lantern in hand, the man rejoined his patrol and vanished into the dark.

“We can’t afford more victims. I have to do something… Not that I need to ask about you.”

“I’ll find that man—for my own sake.”

(I’ll catch him no matter what. I’ll…!)

They began walking through the city. Though numerous patrols were out, the elite legion’s losses, self-preservation instincts, and fear of further casualties had left gaps in surveillance.

Yet the killer remained unfound—strange, given the city’s seasoned adventurers and warriors aiding the search.

An elusive, unknown enemy.

“Hey, doesn’t this area feel a bit… neglected?”

“Naturally. They’re prioritizing densely populated zones.”

A cold wind howled. No voices, no light—just dim, unsettling streets. Alicia and Fei pressed on.

Then, they noticed it. The utter absence of sound. No wind, no life—as if they’d been thrown into another world.

Yet the streets were unchanged.

Huh? Alicia squinted. Ahead stood something like a massive scarecrow.

“You came sooner than expected.”

“Well, we weren’t exactly being subtle.”

“I’ll handle this.”

“No, I will.”

The scarecrow lunged, its laughter a dry, rustling mockery.

“Gh—!”

For Alicia, it was the first time she’d felt such overwhelming bloodlust. A true madman—a predator far beyond her. Her limbs trembled.

“Eh… ah… a-ahh…!”

“Fall back. This is beyond you.”

“Huh? Not calling for help? Someone might hear if you scream.”

“I don’t need backup to deal with you.”

“Heh… Suit yourself. Not that it matters—this barrier blocks sound. No one’s coming. That said, the girl’s cute! And you’re handsome! Are you two search team volunteers?”

“No.”

“Oh, just good Samaritans? How kind! Then I’ll kill you gently. I like kind, earnest people. It’s fun—watching them hunt me with bloodshot eyes, playing tag while I kill. Isn’t that the best?”

“……”

“Well, I’d love to play with the legions, but… they’re not showing up. Faction disputes? Don’t wanna lose members? How selfish. Oh, curious why I’m talking so much? It’s simple—I’m kind. I want you to know who’s killing you.”

“……”

“Plus, this barrier’s special. Sound doesn’t escape. No one will approach—like a subliminal suggestion. Neat, huh? A rare ability… though I didn’t earn it myself.”

Perhaps bored with the conversation, Fei slashes with his sword—only for the man to parry it effortlessly.

“Ah, my name’s Kyle! Nice to meet you!”

“……”

“Ignoring me? You’re a real villain! I won’t forgive you!”

Kyle swings his sword. Despite his psychopathic, incomprehensible rambling, his blade work is flawless.

“You’re… sentenced to be torn limb from limb in excruciating pain! Followed by a full course of torture!”

“……”

“…Huh?”
