A Story of a Cannon Fodder Volume 4 Chapter 3 part 4

“…Huh?”

His blade doesn’t reach Fei’s skin. Every strike is deflected. Worse, Kyle is forced to step back, nearly eating a counterattack.

“Hmm? You… can you see the future? Or… do you know this? The Memory Blade?”

“……”

“Mmm, are you a peer? A junior? A senior? Or a Mystic Eye user? None of those? Whatever… you’re troublesome.”

In Fei’s mind, Arthur’s sword dances flash—far more beautiful and precise. Compared to that, Kyle’s sword is nothing.

“Annoying. You… but your physical enhancement isn’t that great. I can crush you from above. Besides, I’m better at magic! Fair warning—if my hand touches you, it’s game over. I can steal all five senses! Forgot to mention that earlier!”

With that, he slams his palm onto the ground. Giant spikes erupt from the earth beneath Fei, forcing him to unleash his full Star Energy into his right leg to dodge. He leaps back, positioning himself to shield Alicia if needed.

“Ouch, your leg looks painful! Poor thing! I’ll end your suffering now!”

“Tch.”

Spikes target Fei’s swollen, blackened right leg. He slashes most with his sword, but blood still drips from the wounds.

Meanwhile, Alicia trembles in terror. The spikes turn toward her. Clicking his tongue, Fei channels Star Energy into his left leg and leaps, cutting them down midair.

“…S-sorry.”

“Tch… forget it.”

“Eek! B-behind you—!”

But the opening costs him—Kyle’s hand grazes Fei’s throat. Instantly, Fei’s consciousness plunges into darkness… no, not darkness. He’s aware but feels nothing.

“A-ah…”

“Tsk tsk. You might’ve won if you hadn’t shielded her. Or was this just to leave us alone? Anyway, hey—you’re cute! My type! Let’s have some fun! Don’t worry, I’ll erase your senses first. No pain! Then, peaceful sleep as a gift!”

“E-eh? N-no, stop…!”

Paralyzed by fear, she can’t move.

The madman steps closer. He sees himself as kind—explaining every detail of death to his victims, stealing their senses to kill them painlessly.

Yet, he contradicts himself, slicing limbs off before restoring pain just to hear screams. A hypocrite who believes his cruelty is mercy.

Now, Alicia’s senses will be stolen, violated, then restored only to suffer again. Later, Mordred arrives—saving her life but leaving her shattered.

Then, after minimal involvement, the search party’s Rhine rescues them. That’s how this tragedy should’ve ended.

The deranged man closes in.

Fei’s senses are gone, his gaze unfocused. Alicia feels the terror of her life’s end looming.

But…

Day Two in the Free City! Three Major Events!

Morning: Heard rumors of a serial killer. Cleared the victims’ grudges and explored a dungeon for my own event progress!

Dungeon: Reunited with Mordred. Learned the killer strikes at night—so I scouted the city with Alicia!

Result: Shielded Alicia and lost my senses!

Yep. That’s the third one. Huh… So this is what losing your senses feels like?

…Kinda normal, actually? Aside from no sight, smell, sound, touch, or taste, it’s fine.

Lele keeps fighting even without sight. That’s normal, right? What’s missing isn’t for others to decide—it’s my call. The protagonist doesn’t buckle this easily.

Speaking of… Kyle, was it? Guy wouldn’t shut up. At first, I thought he was just insane, but…

You know those villains in shounen manga?

The ones who monologue their abilities, hand the hero their weakness, and die? Yeah. Dumbass. Exposing a sense-stealing power?

Now I know how to beat him.

Ever heard of the sixth sense?

I have no feeling now, but I know—the protagonist never drops his sword. I know my careless enemy stands before me.

Then all I have to do is move with my soul, with my intuition. The answer is simple.

If your five senses are taken from you, why don’t you act with your sixth sense?

It’s okay, my soul isn’t dead, it’s still there. Move your body, And…

Cut him down.

Alicia’s tear-streaked face twists further—this time in shock.

“…Huh?”

Kyle’s right arm flies through the air. Then his left. Finally, his torso is slashed open—

by Fei.

“G-GAAAH!! N-no way!! Why—your senses—?!”

“……”

“WHY?! HOW?!”

Fei closes his eyes and swings again. Panicked, Kyle retreats, firing earth spikes with magic. They pierce Fei’s abdomen—blood spills.

“AAAAAAAGH!! MY ARMS!!”

Both arms are gone. Without palms, he can’t steal senses—not even his own.

“Aaagh! What the hell! You! ”

“Y-you…!”

(No way… Did he… move by instinct? Unbelievable…)

For a second, she wonders if the sense-stealing was a lie.

But Fei, still dragging his mangled legs, slashes wildly at empty air—proof enough.

Kyle collapses, bleeding out from his arms and gut. Pain, exhaustion—he can’t stand.

“Bravo~♪”

“Y-you…?”

“Oh? You’re here already?”

As Alicia slumps in relief, Mordred appears—smiling like a kid in a candy store.

“Why… are you here?”

“Why? To kill that vermin. As I told you earlier.”

“…Were you watching the whole time?”

“Mm-mm. Just arrived♪ But I’ve pieced it together”

Mordred is thrilled. She shudders, rubbing her own shoulders, panting with euphoria.

Alicia recoils. Before her: an unhinged Mordred, a screaming armless Kyle, and Fei—laughing as he hacks at imaginary foes, legs in tatters.

Pure chaos.

“Now then, time to exterminate that flea.”

“YOU!! Mordred! Kill him! HELP ME! We’re from the same homeland!!”

“Long time no see. Still only talking about yourself… Disgusting. Calling yourself kind—”

“Wait! You’re killing ME?!”

“Naturally. All light must be snuffed out—our blood oath. Ah, let me explain, in your style. The reason I broke your barrier? Simple. I cast a spell on myself: ‘Crowds don’t bother me.’”

“W-wha—?! THAT’S IT?!”

“Turns out I’m a bit mad too~ Easy, really. After that, I just had to find your ‘repel strangers’ barrier. Hilarious—your own ‘strangeness’ made it obvious. A proper barrier would’ve masked everything.”

“AAAAAHH!! DAMN IT!! I’D HAVE KILLED HIM IF NOT FOR YOU!!”

“Ohoho~ Finally cracking jokes? You’ve lost. Utterly. To Dear Fei~♪ Saw enough—dragging that girl in? Pathetic. Then getting cocky after stealing his senses? Losing your arms and gut? Loser. A pitiful, disgraceful weakling. That’s you. Despair—and die.”

“WAIT! There’s… another one! I’ll give you intel—!”

“Post-mortem touch will handle that. You knew, didn’t you? How shameless. Dear Fei would’ve committed seppuku by now.”

“N-no—!”

A single stab to the heart. Kyle dies—too bloodless to even gush. Mordred removes her glove, lightly touching his hand.

Ah, I see. The little troublemaker is here too. Perfect. Crushing two birds with one stone… I suppose I’ll stay in this city just a bit longer… Especially since Dear Fei is here too♪”

After killing Kyle, Mordred spotted Fei—still swinging his blade relentlessly. Fei, drenched in blood, grinned with unshakable resolve. Just the sight of him made Mordred’s heart race and her lower body burn.

“Ahh… Aah… Ahhh, as expected, Dear Fei is just magnificent♪”

“…Hm?”

“Oh my, it seems your senses have returned.”

“…Mordred.”

“Yes, we meet quite often, don’t we? Truly, this must be fate between you and me—oopsie, that was close!”

The moment Fei’s senses returned, he collapsed from blood loss. Mordred rushed to catch him, supporting his body.

“My, what an unexpectedly adorable sleeping face… How delightful… I’ve been blessed with quite the sight♪”

She traced Fei’s cheek, brushed his eyebrows—hardly appropriate behavior toward someone who’d just passed out from blood loss and exhaustion. Somewhere, a certain panda had also let Fei rest on its lap while he was oxygen-deprived, gently touching his face. Maybe the two of them were more alike than they seemed.

“Hey, you there!”

“Oh? The barrier’s been lifted, I see.”

“Tch! Alicia… You—that corpse—!”

With Kyle’s death, the crowd-dispersing barrier faded, allowing Rhine to step into the scene—blood-soaked Fei, an unfamiliar man’s corpse, and Alicia, who’d fainted from sheer terror and exhaustion.

“Ah, this man was the murderer causing havoc in the free city. It’d be a great help if you could take him off our hands.”

“Sorry, but I’ve got questions for you too.”

“My apologies. I’ve already pledged my heart to Dear Fei, so I cannot accept your invitation. Besides, he needs immediate medical attention… Well then, farewell—ah.”

Just as Mordred was about to leave with Fei, she noticed Alicia lying unconscious. Frankly, she had no interest in the girl—but she had been with Fei the whole time.

In the dungeon, and now. Whether they were connected somehow, or (she shuddered at the thought) even lovers, Alicia was undeniably Fei’s companion.

“I’ll be borrowing this one for a while. The rest is up to you~!”

“You’re not getting away—!”

Rhine drew his sword, intent on stopping Mordred as she hoisted both Fei and Alicia onto her back. He swung, careful not to graze Alicia—but in an instant, Mordred was already behind him.

“Too slow. You’ve got decent potential… and some resolve, I suppose… But after seeing Dear Fei, yours feels terribly pale in comparison.”

“Tch, wait—!”

Mordred was already vanishing into the distance. Rhine gave chase but couldn’t catch up. Despite carrying two people, she only grew farther away.

And so, the murderer who’d plagued the free city was—technically—captured.
