Prologue
“Behold, silver-haired princess. What a beautiful city”
While gazing outside the room, that person spoke.
What lay beyond was the view of the city. But since it was already night, you could hardly see any buildings. Only the soft, scattered glow of lights could be made out.
“It’s not beautiful. The night always looks like this. It’s just normal.”
When I said that, that person gave me a gentle smile.
“That normalcy is precious. Just imagine — in each of those lights, there is a human life unfolding. Not a single one is the same. Each one spins its own unique story. Don’t you think that’s something like a miracle?”
“Is that so? But don’t they all just live the same way? Everyone sleeps, wakes up in the morning, works during the day, and eats in between. Nothing special ever really happens. I don’t think a big word like ‘miracle’ fits something like that.”
“Even so, you want to protect this city, don’t you?”
Ugh. His words caught me off guard. He was right, but honestly, there wasn’t some deep reason behind it. I just had this vague feeling — like I had to.
“…It’s more like a duty I have as royalty. It’s not like I have any strong attachment to the people of this city.”
There aren’t many people I’m close to. I don’t even have many good memories here.
When I think about it again… Why do I have to be the one to protect this place?
Maybe it wouldn’t even matter if it were destroyed.

“Is that so? Then try imagining this city — this country — being invaded by monsters. Wouldn’t you feel something about that?”
At his words, I tried picturing the city under attack.
Buildings being destroyed and set ablaze. People I barely know — but still recognize — being killed by monsters.
That image… did stir something inside me. At the very least, it didn’t feel good.
“Well… sure, I guess it would be unpleasant. But even so, I still wouldn’t call it beautiful. It’s not the kind of thing that makes such a pretty word come to mind.”
“That’s only because the time you’ve lived is still short. One day, when enough time has passed, you’ll understand. You’ll look back and realize… yes, it was beautiful.”
“Then, for someone like you, who’s lived longer than I have… Do you really see it as that beautiful?”
To be honest, that was the question I most wanted to ask. It felt like he was just saying nice things without meaning them.
“I do see it that way. It’s something you are trying to protect. How could it possibly not be beautiful?”
That answer felt like he was dodging the question.
It still seemed like he was just sugarcoating things.But the way he looked at the city was so gentle… That I couldn’t help but stare too, at the view I should have been used to by now.
It was probably a meaningless moment. A pointless conversation.
And yet — for some reason, I still remember it to this day.
