The Devil Princess Volume 4 chapter 5 part 2

And so we continued our journey, passing through various countries along the way.

However, despite this world have developing magic instead of science, it’s at most a modern medieval level of technology. There are no high-speed trains or flying vehicles like the “world of light” I saw in that dream.

You’d think a country like Terthed would develop those, but in this world, “monsters” exist unlike over there. Apparently there are even gigantic monster birds, making air travel extremely dangerous.

…Or maybe those huge sparrows occasionally flying overhead are harmless? I hear they’re quite docile, but build nests in high places, so even royal castles have to budget considerably for countermeasures.

Not to mention the herds of hippos and elephants that attack travelers on sight, making it difficult to even build highways.

So for the fastest transportation, we use military carriages capable of decent speeds. But with over two thousand in our large group, travel still takes a long time no matter what.

Just crossing a border, paying respects to the authorities, resupplying enough food for over two thousand people to consume, and passing through takes at least a month alone.

Headed north to the front lines, we have to pass through at minimum four nations…

As we head further north and borders become less densely located, spending one to two months per country, by the time we had gotten used to living in the carriages, we finally arrived in the northern region.

“Th-th-th-this, th-this, this is Korpo! I-I’m s-so h-h-honored to m-meet you, Lady Yuru-yuru!”

“……..”

Who’s being “yuruyuru”!? Honored but ridiculous, how rude!

Prince Korpo of a small country, who made such an outrageous statement the moment we met, turned beet red, foamed at the mouth, and fainted on the spot before leaving.

“Do you need healing?”

“No, I’d be grateful if you just left me be.”

The king Korkopo, the father of Korpo-kun, bowed his head with a somber expression as he spoke.

We had finally arrived at the frontlines in one of the three nations, the Kingdom of Korkopo, and stopped by to pay our respects.

Unlike my older sisters, We who are part of the official hero’s party, were warmly welcomed throughout the country and even invited to dinner by the king. However, the moment his son saw me, he let out a faint “Ah…”

Wait, what’s that supposed to mean?

Am I not supposed to be looked at directly? Am I some kind of dangerous object? Is there an age restriction?

Sure, I’ve had grown men cower before me, but being feared by a cute younger boy? That’s quite a shock!

As I forced a smile, my face slightly pale, Rick and Noël patted my shoulders from either side to comfort me.

“Stop messing with the kid.”

“Your Highness… please behave yourself.”

I’m not messing with anyone! What do you mean, behave myself?!

Come to think of it, I think I saw Korpo-kun’s name on the list of potential suitors I glanced at before leaving the Holy Kingdom. Well, that’s probably off the table now.

Oh well, it’s fine!

By the way, the reason we’re using this country as a base is because Taliteld provides the largest amount of financial support to Korkopo. The Holy Kingdom’s army, which departed before us, is also stationed here.

The three northern nations, serving as a shield against the demons, receive a lot of financial aid from the central nations of the continent, which they use to maintain their own armies and mercenaries.

Even without the demons, monsters come from the north, so stopping them is crucial.

This country doesn’t have any notable industries and relies on financial aid to operate, so they don’t complain about having thousands of Taliteld’s soldiers here.

In fact, they seem rather pleased. Just look at the streets—they’re filled with things like “Hero’s Buns” and “Saintess’s Rice Crackers.”

Despite its somewhat relaxed and cute-sounding name, it took us over half a year to reach this country! We left the Holy Kingdom in winter, and now it’s early summer! Summer!

At this rate, if we don’t do anything, we won’t make it back to the Holy Kingdom within the year.

Well, one advantage is that I can skip my eleventh birthday party in two months due to official duties, but I’d rather celebrate that with my family!

Oh well, I can’t help it now that I’m here.

Even though it’s the northern part of the continent, it’s still hot in summer. My wardrobe, which was designed to reduce travel luggage, consists mostly of black dresses, but black in summer is just stifling.

However, the dress Tina and Fanny made for me has a transformation feature, and the layers of fabric have somehow reduced, turning the sleeves, back, and chest into mesh.

The amount of skin showing hasn’t increased, but if you look closely, you can see a faint glimpse of bare skin. If my father saw this, he’d probably scold me, Also Rick and Noël have been careful to only look at my face.

Maybe Korpo-kun’s reaction was because of this? No, no, he’s only about ten years old, what’s he even thinking?

…Oh well.

As for our plans, we can’t just head straight to the demon lands immediately after arriving.

After over half a year of travel, everyone is exhausted—though some have been enjoying the hospitality and sightseeing in various countries—and the horses are tired too. More importantly, we need to gather information, so we’ll be resting here for three weeks.

While we rest in the guest rooms provided by the castle, Rick and Noël train with their swords, and I visit the temple to heal the wounded and sick, while also getting measured for a new dress for some reason.

Still…

“You’ve kept us waiting for quite a while…”

“Tina, Fanny, do you have something suitable for going out?”

Two weeks after arriving in Korkopo, there’s actually something I’ve been wanting to do here.

That is, to go out into the night streets!

No, I’m not planning to go to any forbidden places. It’s just that in the Holy Kingdom, most shops close by 8 PM, so it gets boring.

So, where am I going? Just a regular tavern.

You might think, “There are taverns everywhere,” but the reason I chose this country is because it’s the frontlines.

Being the frontlines, this country is where many people gather.

The central nations of the continent have sent troops as part of the human army, and mercenaries from many countries, not just Taliteld, have gathered here. This is where you can hear stories and insider information that you’d rarely get in the well-behaved Holy Kingdom.

Of course, those stories also contain lies and exaggerations. That’s why I need to see the fluctuations in their souls myself to determine the truth!

Vio and the others take care of me until after dinner, but then it’s free time, and my attendants are supposed to look after me until morning.

When I was younger, I’d get caught just stepping out of my room… but now it’s different. With Fanny’s abilities, I can leave without anyone noticing. …It’s all this clumsy me fault.

Just in case, I checked the rooms of the female knights, but most of them had gone out to play, and only Sarah-chan was left, sound asleep despite it being early.

“……Hey.”

Even though it’s safe, I felt a bit guilty to a member of the knight guard, so I lightly pinched her cheek, and for some reason, she mumbled, “Thank you…”

You must be really tired.

Alright, let’s go!

Dressed like a merchant’s daughter traveling, I slip out of the castle window.

This time, it’s a secret outing, so the problem is my “sparkly” golden hair. There’s nothing I can do about that… I’ll just tie it into a ponytail and pin my bangs to the side.

…I have a feeling the problem isn’t really solved.

The other issue is my age. You might say that’s the biggest problem, but what can I do about my age? I’m not some mysterious creature like Mylene!

Still, I’m almost as tall as my older sisters and Betty, so I think I can pass for twelve. With adult clothing, I might look a bit older.

But still, early teens… However, my companions today are the twins Noah and Nia. They’re thirteen but tall, so with the right clothes, we can probably pass.

On the other hand, if Tina and Fanny were with me, we’d just look like a trio of kids, so I’ve asked them to keep an eye out for any familiar faces we might accidentally run into.

Now then…
