I’m a D-Rank Adventurer Volume 4 Chapter 4 part 6

I grabs Seft by the hair and pulls him up by force. Seft tried to gather some magic power in his right hand, as if he still had some energy left to resist.

“Apologize.”

Before he could activate it, I twisted and tore off his right arm. Seft writhed in pain.

Despite his body being covered in multiple layers of strong protective magic, my magic—enhanced by reinforcement—seemed slightly superior.

Soon, he was screaming and thrashing around instead of simply healing with recovery magic or reapplying protective spells. He probably hadn’t experienced much pain before.

Having powerful abilities meant nothing if you couldn’t control them. I wasn’t about to lose to this guy, who had only changed bodies and taken from others.

After Seft thrashed about for a while, he finally calmed down. His face was a mess of tears and snot.

“N-no… I don’t want this. Why me, why do I have to—”

Seft was panicking and crawling around helplessly. It was pathetic.

“Help me, please, I don’t want to die…!”

He even started begging for his life, looking up at me with a pleading expression.

Pathetic. He didn’t have a shred of conviction, just clinging desperately to life without any pride.

Seriously, why did the Holy Seal choose him as the hero? I’m way more heroic during my training than this guy. They must have terrible judgment.

After scratching my head and sighing, I muttered.

“Die.”

Crushed by my magical power, Seft vanished into nothingness.

With all threats eliminated, I headed towards Letty.

Squatting beside Letty, who was lying down, I gently placed a finger on her slender throat.

—Thank goodness, she’s still breathing.

Though barely clinging to life, Letty was faintly holding on. I immediately tried to transfer my body’s magic to her, placing my hand firmly on her forehead.

But—

“Damn it…!”

The magic I poured into Letty’s body leaked out instead of staying inside.

It was the worst outcome. The transfer of magic from another person could only be done if the magic’s nature matched the recipient’s body. Letty’s magic and mine didn’t match.

External magic could change its nature as much as needed. But internal magic was created from my soul within the body, and its nature couldn’t be changed at all.

Even though I tried over and over again, it kept leaking out each time.

I gritted my teeth in frustration. I couldn’t keep my emotions in check no matter how hard I tried.

What should I do? Should I rush Letty to the city now and find a compatible person? Would we make it in time? Just the fact that she’s still breathing is a miracle, isn’t it?

It’s impossible. In the first place, transferring another person’s internal magic would only extend their life by a few hours. It was meaningless unless Letty could somehow produce her own internal magic.

But could she do that…?

You can’t fight against death from old age. People who die of natural causes can’t be revived even with Resurrection.

Unless, of course, a god.

“…A god?”

Suddenly, it hit me, and I looked up.

A god… yes, if I had the power beyond human knowledge, like a god’s miraculous power.

I already have that power, don’t I?

As soon as I realized it, something black and ominous overflowed from my body. It writhed like a living creature and began to cling to my body.

This power, which allowed me to tear Henry’s soul from the demon and house it in the ceremonial sword.

This power, which I was sure could create Henry’s body.

This incomprehensible power made me realize that I could create Letty’s internal magic.

Placing my hands over Letty, I focused.

But—nothing happened.

“Move… move!”

The black magic remained still. It just writhed around me.

Why, why couldn’t I do it now when I could before, why couldn’t I do it now…!

“—Dammit!”

Blood flowed from my bitten lips in anger.

“I won’t admit it, I won’t admit it.”

I would keep repeating it over and over again until I could. There was no option to give up. I refuse to accept this ending.

“You still haven’t heard…!”

Why didn’t you consult me about anything? Even though you’ve invited me to the party and caused me so much trouble, you didn’t say anything and left.

“You’re not allowed to die without my permission!”

I shouted, and that’s when it happened.

“[Seriously… You still haven’t remembered how to use it, have you? What a pain… —]”

A woman’s voice came from ahead.

I looked up suddenly. Standing there was a girl with long silver hair.

In her black gothic dress, Enri, with her waist-length silver hair, casually brushed it back and fixed her glittering gaze upon me.

I quickly fired a magic bullet as a warning, but it passed through Enri’s body and struck the wall behind her.

“Ah, attacking won’t do you any good. I’m just an illusion, a mere projection for advice.”

Enri raised both hands and waved them gently.

Upon closer inspection, her body was translucent, and the wall behind her was visible. Moreover, for some reason, the surrounding objects were perfectly still and not moving. It was as if time had stopped.

There was no hostility emanating from Enri. Advice… was she going to teach me about this power?

Ignoring my confusion, Enri began to speak.

“Listen, I’ll only say this once. There are conditions to using that power on someone other than yourself. You must understand your opponent correctly.”

“Understand… the opponent?”

“It’s not necessary to know every detail about them. Just, if there’s a discrepancy in the memories you and your opponent share, you can’t use it. The mistake lies in your memories with her.”

“…Mistake? But I don’t have many memories with Letty.”

“Really? Think back carefully. Think about the first time you met her.”

Following her instructions, I recalled.

The first time I met Letty… it was when I returned from the Trial Valley five years ago, after challenging the Great King Bear residing there.

I had saved Letty from the Great King Bear’s attack in the forest, then returned to town and parted ways with her.

I made some hurtful remarks at that time, which Letty insists on cherishing as precious memories. She’s embellishing things even though I didn’t do much.

Ah, that’s right, there’s no mistake.

……

……

………….

…………………….

……………………………………Huh?

Really, is that so?

A strong sense of discomfort. Something’s off, my body is screaming.

A nauseating feeling lodged in my throat. My head is telling me not to think about it anymore.

“Let me give you a hint, where does the Great King Bear reside?”

“The Great King Bear… in the forest–“

As I spoke, I immediately realized.

No.

The Great King Bear is a monster that inhabits caves.

They live in dark caves, feasting on carrion. They shouldn’t be in the forest.

But, that’s strange. I definitely remember rescuing Letty from the Great King Bear in the forest. It’s firmly in my memory, and I remember the scenery. There’s no mistake–

“…What is this?”

The more I think, the more my memories and the facts diverge. Sweat flows down my body, and my heart beats faster. What’s going on, this is weird, what the hell is happening.

“Remember, the correct memories. The precious memories that have been stolen.”

“I…”

In an instant, the threads of memory connected.

Memories that I should have remembered rushed into my head all at once. Memories of meeting Letty in the Valley of Trials, memories of teaching her how to defeat monsters, memories of having meals together in the town, memories of camping together when we couldn’t find an inn, memories of completing quests together and being thanked, memories of Letty not wanting to be apart from me—memories of parting ways.

I remembered every single memory from when we met until we parted. Confusion and astonishment overwhelmed me, and I fell to my knees in stunned silence.

I haven’t done much? Just helped her? What was I even saying?

I’ve been taking care of her a lot, haven’t I?

Letty looks at me with sparkling eyes, amused by my pitiful remarks. She talks about what a hero I am even though I haven’t become one yet, and she takes care of me like she’s my own sister.

Why did I forget? Am I stupid, or just too stupid?

“You seem to have remembered, huh?”

“…Yeah.”

I nod dumbfoundedly. Enri lifts the corner of his mouth and says, “I see.”

“Don’t forget again. See you later.”

With that, Enri disappears. Time resumes its course, and I suddenly look up.

It felt like I had just been dreaming. But the memories are vividly engraved in my mind.

Letty is by my side. I look at my right hand in silence.

Then, black magic gathers, and my right hand is dyed black.

The exact same phenomenon as before.

…Honestly, I still doubt if I can do it. After all, it’s different from when it was Henry.

When it was Henry, I was able to separate the demon from the soul based on the memories that resided there because the soul remained.

But Letty is different. She only has mana inside her created vessel, and she doesn’t have the soul that humans normally possess.

In other words, to make Letty human—I have to create a soul.

To maintain her memories while creating an internal magical power that fits Letty…

Such a thing is no longer within human capabilities.

…… Can you do it, me?

…No, that’s not it. It’s not about whether I can do it or not, it’s about doing it.

I’ve always been like that. I believed I could do anything because I’m a genius, and I’ve always pushed forward.

So, it’s the same this time too, right?

What’s the point of not believing in myself? Believe it, there’s nothing I can’t do.

I take a deep breath and exhale. I extend my hands and hold them above Letty’s head.

“Letty… don’t worry.”

I will save you—

Dark and ominous magic unfolds, enveloping Letty.

“I will definitely save you.”

  1. “It seems that my magic, enhanced magic” – quite redundant or there was some thing different.
“Soon, i was screaming” – “he was”, especially if we include next sentence.
