The Devil Princess Volume 4 chapter 6 part 1

Chapter 6: I Turned Eleven

“Damn it! What’s going on?”

Suspended in the air through flight magic, the mysterious old magician—Geass, the strategist of the Demon Army—cursed as he glared at the Forest of Monsters.

It was supposed to be a well-orchestrated plan: an all-out assault by the Demon Army, reckless but effective. A vanguard scouting unit was to strike before the main force, initiating a war of attrition between demons and humans. Everything was unfolding as Geass had envisioned… or so he thought.

But then, an unforeseen disaster occurred.

The Demon Division, led by the Black Princess Killian, was supposed to carve a path through the forest using monstrous beasts to trample the terrain. Yet, their formation faltered, and then—without a trace—they vanished.

Geass had accounted for some delays; after all, monsters operated more on instinct than intellect. But for an entire force of 200,000 to disappear? Impossible.

There were signs of their advance—trampled trees, scorched earth. But at some point, the entire army had vanished. If they had engaged the human forces, there would have been evidence: corpses, scattered soldiers, remnants of battle. Yet there was nothing.

Refusing to believe the reports, Geass investigated personally.

But all he found was emptiness. No footprints, no battle scars, no fleeing survivors, no corpses—nothing remained.

This disappearance caused delays for the Beast Demon Division and the ever-growing Human-Demon Corps, which had absorbed countless militia forces. The advance of the main army was thrown into disarray. Worse still, the scouting teams that were meant to regroup with the main force ended up overextending, allowing the human forces to eliminate them with minimal casualties.

“Oh… O’ God…”

Geass murmured—not in despair, but as if pleading for divine guidance. But the god he served, the one who dwelled in the deepest darkness, would not answer him for something so trivial.

That god only appeared when the contract was fulfilled. Geass knew this. And yet, he still prayed.

But his troubles were far from over.

As a strategist, Geass had assembled his own intelligence unit, selecting those skilled in magic to serve under him. This personal network had been instrumental in guiding the Demon Army into a war of attrition—manipulating paths, gathering enemy intelligence, relaying commands.

Now, part of that network had gone silent.

He had expected some losses—intelligence work was dangerous. But when casualties exceeded 30%, the situation changed drastically.

Could this, too, be connected to the Demon Division’s disappearance?

This war was Geass’s final and greatest opportunity. He had been born into this world against his will, spent a hundred years waiting for the right moment, and now—finally—it was within his grasp.

And yet, just as his hand reached for victory, it slipped away once more.

At this point, it felt as though some cruel god was toying with him. The thought filled Geass with a deep, gnawing dread.

“…Hmph.”

Night had fallen as Geass continued his search. The moon, hidden behind the towering cliffs, now rose high in the sky. That was when he sensed something approaching.

Few in the Demon Army could fly—only those with wings, such as beastkin or bird-blooded demons. Yet someone had found him, despite his concealment magic, and was flying directly toward him.

It could only be one of his “disciples.”

Geass had personally trained a handful of exceptional intelligence operatives, teaching them his flight magic. They served as his eyes and ears, their mobility allowing them to gather and relay crucial information.

“Did you find something?”

As Geass dispelled his concealment spell, a familiar figure in a black robe came into view. But something was… off.

He remembered this disciple well—one with a significant reserve of magic power. Yet now, the once-radiant darkness of his skin was pallid, as if drained of life.

“Master Geass… West… the forest… armed… humans…”

The disciple gasped for breath, his voice weak with exhaustion.

“I see…”

Geass didn’t offer him comfort. Instead, he took a slight step back.

“The western forest, you say. Rest at once.”

“No… I can still—”

Ignoring the command, the disciple shook his head and floated closer.

Geass narrowed his eyes.

“I said—[Rest].” ──【Fire Javelin】──

“──!?”

The incantation-less spell erupted instantly. The disciple, unable to react in time, was engulfed in flames.

──But.

“You were possessed after all, weren’t you?!”

The disciple’s face twisted, bestial and grotesque, as he lunged at Geass despite being wreathed in fire.

“Have you even forgotten the magic I taught you?! 【Jaws of Jototh】!”

Geass’s original spell activated, summoning spectral jaws that crushed the burning disciple in an instant, scattering blood and flesh through the air.

“What the hell happened…?”

Geass didn’t believe his disciple had betrayed him. Even if he had, he wouldn’t have turned into… that.

Before he could process the situation, a shadowy figure emerged through the haze of blood.

A girl.

With bat-like wings as dark as the void, she floated before him, her silver hair tinged with violet. Her dress, the color of twilight, swayed as she daintily pinched its hem, offering a smile far too seductive for her apparent age.

“Why, I’ve come to ‘play.’”

A year ago, at Eurushia’s birthday party, Mylene had been told to “go play.”

Eurushia had meant it literally—a kind suggestion for her serious-minded friend to take a break. But Mylene didn’t take it at face value.

There had to be a deeper meaning…

Though Eurushia often seemed carefree, whimsical, and thoughtless, she was still one of the highest-ranking demons—a being known as the “Devil.” Surely, she wouldn’t have told a Grand Vampire to “play” without reason.

Besides… Since the dark clouds began gathering in the northern skies, Eurushia had changed.

A fleeting, ephemeral quality had settled upon her. Her beauty had matured, making her even more untouchable—a distant, unapproachable flower, observed from afar at royal gatherings.

It must have worried the boys who admired her.

Mylene knew Eurushia was heading to the Demon Kingdom as a saint. While she was away, Mylene had planned to oversee the Holy Kingdom from the shadows, ensuring the safety of those Eurushia cherished.

But if Eurushia’s words had a hidden meaning… then wasn’t she instructing Mylene to take advantage of the chaos and bolster her own forces?

To “play” was to venture beyond the Holy Kingdom of Taliteld and choose new subordinates with her own eyes.

And so, when Eurushia departed for the Demon Kingdom, Mylene, too, set her plans into motion.

Between the frontlines of the human kingdoms and the Demon Realm were many human and demon mercenaries.

Among them were many exceptional individuals who had survived by choosing the optimal path for themselves. From these, Mylene selectively added to her attendants those she deemed worthy.

After six months had passed and she had hunted down all the promising candidates, the one she found before her was this old magic-user.

“I have come to ‘play’.”

“—-What?”

Before the old man could utter another word, Mylene, having swiftly circled behind him, raked her claws across his back.

Unlike a mere magic-user who could only levitate, Mylene who used the wings formed from her own blood and dark magic could soar through the skies like a bird.

However, the old man seemed to be using some kind of barrier magic, deflecting her attack and preventing any serious injury from that first strike.

“You…are a vampire!”

“Well deduced.”

Mylene thinly smiled as she licked the blood from her elongated claws.

Even in the Land of Demons which accepted monsters, vampires who could infiltrate and consume an entire nation from within were feared like evil and shunned.

“Hmm…”

While Mylene had no particular interest in the old man, as one taught by demons to discern quality “blood,” she was piqued by a certain “scent” emanating from him.

According to Eurushia, these constantly scheming old folks had an aged, savory richness to them. While a matter of personal taste when it came to food preferences, Mylene did find his blood not unpalatable after sampling it.

However…

“This blood flavor…is human?”
