Mob No. 115: “Understood. I’ll apply by the deadline. Is that acceptable?”
With the numerous feedback and my own doubts, I went ahead and extensively revised the cause.
I think this should be better than before.
I was able to return to Planet Ytts without incident and, upon getting home, was about to do the laundry right away when I got a call from my mom.
[John! I’m glad I reached you!]
“What’s wrong, Mom? You sound really flustered.”
My mom on the hologram of the wrist terminal looked quite panicked.
“Well…something terrible happened…”
From my mom’s demeanor, I judged some major incident must have occurred and switched to talking on the home phone so we could converse calmly.
And the story my mom told me was truly unbelievable.
It seems that while my dad was driving a truck loaded with harvested vegetables to deliver to the cooperative, he got rear-ended.
He wasn’t injured and a diagnosis at the hospital found nothing abnormal.
But the issue was with who had rear-ended him.
The one driving the car that crashed into him was an employee of Labem Corporation where my dad used to work. Seven years ago, he had blamed his own mistake on my dad, saddling him with a huge debt before firing him – a certain Viscount Lindert’s son, Tenot Lindert (age 30).
Apparently, he had graduated top of his class from the Empire’s premier institution, the national Hein University. He only agreed to join Labem Corporation when the president prostrated himself begging, on the condition of being treated as a department head. Then a year later, he made a terrible blunder and pushed the blame onto my dad, the bastard.
Since I was a minor at the time, my parents hadn’t told me about it before, but now that I was an adult, my mom decided it was okay to share.
And the reason Viscount Lindert’s son Tenot had rear-ended my dad’s truck was, he had supposedly bought a vacation home on Planet Tablu and was on his way there with his lover.
At that time, my dad’s truck in front of him made a sudden stop, causing the collision. His car was badly damaged, and he and his lover were seriously injured, so he decided to sue my dad for making the sudden stop.
However, he said he would drop the lawsuit if 3 billion credits in settlement were paid.
But according to my dad’s testimony, others who were at the scene, and the police officer who first arrived, my dad’s truck had stopped at a signal, and there was a smell of alcohol from the car that hit them, with the safety system deactivated – so claims and evidence contradicting him. The damage to the car also wasn’t as bad as claimed.
Furthermore, they’re saying the major injuries are likely false as well.
Yet Viscount Lindert’s son refuses to retract his claim that my dad made a sudden stop, causing his car’s major damage and their serious injuries.
Looks like he didn’t know my dad was the driver.
And the reason he can make such bold claims is, in his own words:
“I am the direct grandson of Duke Altischult Bingil O’Vorls. I’m doted on by my grandfather. Since I’m the one saying this, there’s no mistake. Go against me, and you’ll be seized by the duke family’s guards…alright with that?”
So he says.
Honestly, I think that’s a lie too, but there’s no way we could go to a duke’s estate and ask them to confirm identity.
Even so, my dad had apparently refused stubbornly, insisting the other party was at fault, but the guy had hired some thuggish bodyguards and hinted at violence against my mom if the payment wasn’t accepted.
He probably tricked the upper management at the company with the talk of being the duke’s direct grandson and threats of violence seven years ago, and this time intends to pressure the upper police brass to recognize his claims too.
A good number of foolish nobles were punished after the recent revolt, but some idiots like this were still left, huh.
I can really understand those worker folks’ frustration now.
By the way, my dad is currently desperately trying to raise what little money he can, just in case.
When I told my mom I could provide about 100 million credits from my savings, she showered me with apologies and thanks.
The day after I got the phone call from my mom, I headed to the guild, pondering the whole time what I should do.
To be honest, I want to barge into Labem Corporation right now and shoot that Tenot Lindert dead.
But doing that would make me a criminal, and cause trouble for my parents too.
Up till now, I’d take a few days off after each job, but from now on, I should take high paying jobs with no days off, right?
While thinking about that, I entered the guild building and spotted someone I’d seen before.
It was Lieutenant Schneela Floss, belonging to the 1st fleet of the central fleet suppression unit, and also the adjutant to General Jack Bardou Breskin.

“Hello, Mr. Uzos.”
“Yes, hello. And thank you for your help before.”
“No, it’s only natural to contribute to maintaining order.”
I thanked the lieutenant for the hijacking incident before.
“By the way, what brings you here?”
“Actually, I came to request a job, including you.”
It’s not rare for the military to request jobs from mercenaries.
Since I’m included, they must have come to request something from the entire guild.
However, there was one suspicion I had to confirm first.
“Um…you didn’t happen to arrange this through the general, did you?”
“…What are you referring to?”
Without realizing, my tone toward the lieutenant may have become harsh.
The lieutenant frowned slightly.
“Deliberately sending to my dad’s planet the trash who falsely blamed him twice, intentionally causing an accident to frame my dad as a dangerous driver, presenting settlement money to put him in financial straits so I have no choice but to accept your request.”
“! …If that is the truth, I would have to seriously punch the general.”
Having heard my story, the lieutenant showed anger toward General Bardou.
The lieutenant then video called General Jack Bardou Breskin on a large terminal to question him about the scumbag I mentioned who had saddled my dad with his mistakes twice.
And the response from the general after hearing the story was,
[Now now now! I swear to the heavens and earth I didn’t do anything like that!]
Seeing his panicked appearance on screen, it seems the general wasn’t involved.
“It appears you were truthful. I’m glad the general isn’t so foolish.”
The lieutenant nodded deeply.
Although chagrined by his subordinate’s reaction, the general told me about the scum who falsely claimed nobility and burdened my dad twice.
[Firstly, he’s definitely not the duke’s direct grandson. The duke only had one son and daughter. The son is the current Prime Minister, Marquis Terry Langeis O’Vorls. The daughter married into a viscount family. He has 3 grandchildren, the only grandson among them being the second son and eldest child of Marquis Terry Langeis O’Vorls, Oliver Rhemys O’Vorls. He’s 17 years old, and currently ill.]
The moment I heard that information, I wanted to go and shoot that scum dead immediately. But I can’t do that.
“Clearly an imposter. And claiming to be the beloved grandson the duke dotes on is extremely reckless.”
The lieutenant also seemed angered by the facts, her expression turning very cold.
[Well, now that I’ve heard about it, I can’t just let it go. It concerns the duke’s reputation, after all.]
The general also looked quite serious, giving me a glimpse of how disastrous falsely claiming noble status is.
However, the next moment,
[…is what I’d like to say, but busy as I look, I am quite busy, you see. If you there accept the request my subordinate brought, I could spare the time as thanks, but…]
The general clearly recited woodenly in an act, demanding compensation from us.
Well, it’s more credible than claiming it’s completely free goodwill.
“What is that request exactly?”
Taking my response as consent, the lieutenant
“Our request is for you to act as the invasion side unit against our 1st fleet’s combat ship fleet in a mock battle. Of course, the recruitment is open to all mercenaries belonging to the Ytts branch mercenary guild. Details are here.”
She transferred electronic documents to my wrist terminal.
The contents:
○
Work: Mock battle with 1st fleet’s combat ship fleet of the central fleet suppression unit in the Haluitok sector
Term: Around 8 hours in galactic standard time (not including travel time)
Work Environment: Fuel provision before and after battle – replacement with dummy ammunition and restoration
Requirements: Must bring own spaceship – repair costs guaranteed if brought spaceship is damaged
Recruitment: Around 30 people
Compensation: 200,000 credits – fixed. Shootdown bonuses included.
○
He won’t let it go since it concerns the duke’s reputation, but looks like he won’t move quickly unless I accept this.
Since it’s not just me applying, I should be able to avoid standing out if I do this carefully.
They might fill the recruitment quota too.
“Understood. I’ll apply by the deadline. Is that acceptable?”
[Plenty.]
Looking satisfied with my response, the general flashed a grin.
