I’m a D-Rank Adventurer Volume 4 Epilogue part 3

“Why indeed!? Why are you disbanding the party without my permission!? If you’re going to do that, get my permission first or bring another hero! “

While saying something too overbearing, Maya grabs Lucas. Lucas is terribly flustered.

“Just go to another hero if you want.”

“Ugh, seriously? Is your head rotten or something!? Why the hell do I have to leave voluntarily? And do you even understand? I got fired by you, you know? No other hero party would want me because they see me as a ‘white mage who got fired’! Sure, I may have perfect looks and abilities, but my personality is apparently too much of a problem for anyone to hire me!”

“W-well, that’s true–“

“What the hell!? Say that again, I dare you!”

Maya relentlessly punches Lucas in the face with her fist. She’s got a seriously messed-up personality.

Without resistance, Lucas just takes it… wait, huh? Wait, he’s, like, unconscious or something? Wait, wait, wait, stop, stop!

Forcing myself to stop and pulling them apart, Maya stares at me with eyes that could kill with just that look. Terrifying.

“W-well, I did say that, but I still can’t back down. Please… please, won’t you consider coming back to the knight order and the party?”

Wisdom kneels down and presses his forehead to the ground as he speaks. But seriously, your boss’s face is all beaten up. You should’ve stopped this sooner.

“Whif-hafu–“

I couldn’t stand to watch, so I healed Lucas with Heal. The swelling goes down and he is able to speak.

“I-i-if you would just lis–“

“It doesn’t matter! I’ve been serving as a caretaker for Young master since he was so small. No matter what anyone says, I won’t quit!”

“B-but…”

“Besides, you don’t have the authority to refuse. I, boasted to Eve to[defeat the Demon King with my party]. So whether you like it or not, it doesn’t matter, just keep going until we defeat the Demon King!”

With a sharp command, Maya orders him. Lucas falls silent.

I shrug and say,

“So, give it your all to defeat it. …Oh, and…”

I take something out and throw it at Lucas.

“You dropped this, don’t lose it again.”

Lucas catches it. And upon seeing it, his face is filled with surprise.

“Henry–!?”

It’s a ceremonial sword with the soul of Henry inside, a 【Spirit Sword】.

…Seriously, it was a pain to find, sinking to the bottom of the lake. Even with 《Detection Magic》, I couldn’t find it widely. I had to use magic over the entire area to find it finally. It took me a whole day, damn it.

“Well then.”

I turn on my heel and walk away. As I start to walk away, Lucas calls out, “Wait!”

“What?”

Without turning around, I reply with just my head turned.

“You… no, you…”

Lucas tries to say something, but he stutters and swallows his words. Huh?

Showing signs of hesitation, he finally speaks.

“Your name is…”

“Huh?”

“Your name, what is it?”

I tilt my head in confusion. Why is he asking me that?

After thinking about it for a moment, I get a little annoyed and answer normally.

“It’s Jirei. Jirei Laro.”

I say that and turn my back again. Man, what a waste of time–huh? What?

Something is thrown at me from behind, and I catch it after turning around.

…What’s this, a decoration? It’s a brooch with fancy gold decorations.

I give Lucas a puzzled look.

“Here, take it.”

“What’s this for?”

“If you show it in the [Forte Independent State], it’ll serve as an entry permit. In the Vastia continent, there are Edelfe knights scattered all over. If you show this, everyone will be able to help you.”

“Hmm…”

I look at it closely. Well, honestly, I don’t need it, but if you’re giving it to me, I’ll take it.

I toss the brooch into 《Interdimensional Storage》. Let’s go home already, but as I’m about to leave, I’m stopped again, and I turn around a little annoyed.

“What now!?”

Lucas tries to say something… “Ji…?”
“Ji?”

Lucas moves his face several times as if he’s trying to say something,

then finally he looks at me and speaks.

“Laro.”

I’m taken aback by the unexpected word and look at him wide-eyed.

And, as always, Lucas says with an unfriendly face.

“Thank you.”

I turn my back and just say this.

“Yeah.”

Returning to the inn where Letty is, as I reach for the door to enter the room, I hear voices and a cute laugh coming from inside.

Was it about me? I wonder. Occasionally, words like “Ray” or “Jirei-sama” or “Shishou” can be heard. Voices of Letty, Eve, and Rafine. It seems Letty has woken up.

“What’s up, you guys? Were you talking shit about me?”

“Shishou! You’re back!”

“Oh, hey, you should still be sleeping!”

Letty gets out of bed and cheerfully approaches me. You should be sleeping properly, like someone who’s recovering from an illness!

But Letty seems not to hear (or rather, to ignore) me, and she clings to my right arm, saying, “Shishou!” It’s heavy, and really annoying.

“We were discussing the future of the party earlier!”

“Listen! I’m going to join Letty-san’s party!”

“Puff, puff, yay!”

“Huh…”

Eve claps her hands, and Rafine proudly puffs out her chest. Is that really okay…?

“No… Rafine, have you forgotten lately that you’re supposed to be a princess of a nation? You really should stop that—”

“Hey, don’t worry about it. He’s the type who’d make you wait for nine years even after promising. Being a bit selfish is just fine.”

“Nnggghhh–!?”

My irresponsible bunch from the past landed a clean hit. Damn it, damn it, damn it…! Damn, I can’t even retort!!

“I’m strong, so I’ll be fine!” Rafine declared confidently. Though I’m incredibly anxious about it.

“Well… whatever.”

“…? Why are you acting like it’s none of your business?”

“Well, because it doesn’t concern me…”

“But Shishou is joining too, right?”

“??????”

My mind is filled with question marks. What is she talking about?

“Because, Shishou said! When I asked if you could join my party after I became a hero, he said, ‘Hmm… if I’m not chosen as a hero by then, and you stop crying and become strong, then I can join. Well, even if I don’t become a hero, nah it’s ‘impossible’!””

Letty reenacts it with a cheesy pose. A chill runs down my spine.

…Did I, did I say that? I didn’t say—yes, I said it.

I grab my head. What the hell am I doing?

I regret remembering what I said. Can I forget it again if I hit my head really hard? Should I try it?

“But wait a minute! Weren’t you crying earlier? You’re not strong!”

“You said it’s okay to cry! I said it’s okay to be weak! I said I’m fine the way I am! So that means you’ll join, right!”

“What kind of twisted logic is that! Absolutely not!”

“No! No no no no!! you’ll join! you’ll definitely join!!!”

As Letty clings to me and refuses to let go, I keep refusing.

It’s impossible, absolutely impossible! I don’t want to defeat the Demon Lord!!!

But, Letty is stubborn as hell now. I know from experience. She might even have the Holy Seal of Persistence or something, her stubbornness is practically heroic.

Seriously, after going through that, you’re still not going to quit being a hero. If it were me, I’d quit in a second. Are you stupid, seriously, are you stupid?

So, I quickly end the argument and come up with a countermeasure.

“Fine, I’ll join. I’ll join if you meet a condition.”

“Really!?”

Letty’s face lights up brightly. She raises both hands as if to cheer.

“But, there’s a condition! If you can meet it, then I’ll reluctantly join!”

Eehh, Letty complains openly.

“What condition?”

Eve tilts her head and asks. I answer.

“It’s simple, if you become stronger than me, then I’ll join the party! Otherwise, I won’t!”

Letty looks momentarily stunned, but then she immediately frowns and protests.

“Mmm… that’s unfair! It’s unfair!”

“What’s unfair about it! I can’t follow someone weaker than me! If you have a problem with that, then become stronger than me and come back!”

“Muuu… fine! I got it! It’s a promise! Absolutely this time!”

“Ah, that’s fine, no matter how many years, decades it takes!”

“Mmmmmm,” Letty puffed out her cheeks. Phew, thank goodness, she’s such a goofball.

Letty getting stronger than me? Yeah, that’s a story that’ll take who knows how many decades. It’s like winning the astronomical odds of a billion to one. I’d sooner believe, “Actually, I’m a… woman!” That’s more plausible. In other words, it’s impossible no matter what happens.

“Well, we have time. Let’s wait patiently.”

At those words, Letty looked a little pouty for a moment, but then she flashed a smile that seemed to say she was fully motivated.

…Yeah, we have plenty of time.

Ten years, twenty years, fifty years… use that time to defeat the Demon Lord or something.

Letty scowled and reluctantly said, “Okay, then sign this contract!” and handed me a magical contract document. You’re really prepared, huh?

“……”

I held the pen and the magical contract. Letty stood right next to me, silently pressuring me to sign it right away. N-No… I don’t want to sign it!

“Aah!?”

I tore up the contract document. It felt really refreshing.

And then, I grinned. Letty grinned too. And naturally, she pulled out a new contract and handed it to me. Bzzzzt! I tore it up.

“Wait! Sign it! Sign it!”

Letty and I ran around the room in a frenzy. It was only a matter of time before complaints came from the inn.

Eve and Rafine watched us and chuckled, and for some reason, they joined in the chase. Huh, wait… why?

I ran out of places to hide and was cornered against the wall. The three of them closed in on me.

Dammit… oh well, I guess I’ll have to make it up to them!

I put my foot on the window frame, smashed the glass, and escaped outside. I heard surprised voices from behind.

I landed gracefully from the third floor. Without stopping, I started running.

“Shisho!”

As I ran, I glanced back only to see Letty sticking her head out of the window.

Letty took a deep breath and shouted at the top of her lungs.

It was Letty’s usual catchphrase, a phrase I’d heard many times. I couldn’t help but laugh.

“Shisho, I’ll become stronger than you and make you join my party!”

…………However, there was one thing that bothered me.

Why did I remember Letty’s memories wrong? Even if I try to think I forgot, it still doesn’t make sense.

It’s not so much that I had lost my memory, but that I had mistaken it for something else.

It’s as if something that was there before had become something else.

I met Letty at the bottom of the abyss. There’s no way it could have been anyone else now. But for some reason, I felt like I had mistaken her for a different person.

I wracked my brain trying desperately to remember.

Who was it—yes, that person was like a little sister to me—

…….

…….

………….

………….

…………………….

…………………………!

Oh, right. I remembered.

That was, I’m pretty sure—

“Charl, wasn’t it…?”
