Unwanted Galactic Uprising Volume 2 Extra 1 + Afterword

Newly written Special Side Story: I am Karin

My name is Karin.

I am the daughter of a viscount family, with a count family loyal to His Majesty’s faction as our patron.

I’d prefer not to mention the family names, as I don’t necessarily share the same views as my patron or my father, the viscount. I feel a bit hesitant about it.

Since becoming a study companion to Her Highness the Third Princess, I’ve come to agree with her ideas. Now, I wish to be her sword, which has led to increasing disagreements with my father’s views. I suppose I’m a failure as a daughter of a viscount family.

But I have no regrets whatsoever.

It’s strange, though. All nobles should belong to His Majesty’s faction without exception.

Or rather, since His Majesty leads the country, nobles should cooperate with him. But the reality is that this country has been in an odd state for quite some time now.

Factions have formed in various regions, splitting and merging repeatedly. Currently, there are two major factions and several smaller ones.

Regrettably, His Majesty’s faction has become one of these smaller factions.

My father has sworn loyalty to His Majesty alone since before his predecessor’s time, so he still belongs to His Majesty’s faction and shows no intention of changing his stance.

While I’m proud of this, as I’ve grown and started to understand the world better, I’ve begun to develop slightly different ideas.

My thoughts began to change around the time I was nearing the end of my early education and was allowed to serve as a study companion to Her Highness the Third Princess.

To describe Her Highness the Third Princess in a word… No, it’s impossible to describe her in just one word.

If I may speak candidly, Her Highness is not ordinary.

If I dare use a potentially disrespectful expression, it’s only because I know no other way to put it.

In any case, she has a personality that doesn’t fit within the bounds of nobility.

So, perhaps there isn’t a way to describe her without being disrespectful in this country.

At least, I haven’t found one to this day.

That’s how unusual she is.

Above all, her drive for action is extraordinary.

By the time she finished primary education and moved on to secondary education, she was walking around the royal capital with hardly any guards, directly observing the state of the country.

I’ve been fortunate enough to become close friends with Her Highness, which I consider a great honor. However, I often find myself pulled into unladylike behavior because of her. Her conduct could only be described as endearing.

As I was dragged along by Her Highness and had more opportunities to directly inspect the capital area near the imperial palace, I began to feel a strong sense of crisis about the country’s future.

From then on, whenever we had the chance, Her Highness and I would discuss the future of the country.

Of course, as children, we couldn’t come up with any brilliant solutions, but we were serious nonetheless.

We earnestly discussed what the country and royalty meant, what they existed for, why the ancient great empire had fragmented and fallen, and other such unanswerable questions.

But our efforts weren’t entirely fruitless.

After long discussions, Her Highness and I came to share the same opinion about how the country should be.

We concluded that the purpose of a country should be condensed to one point: protecting the smiles of its citizens.

We believed that a country exists to protect the smiles of as many citizens as possible, not just nobles, but even the common people living in slums.

Looking at the current state of our country, how does it measure up?

When we consider this, even as children, we could see that it was moving in the opposite direction.

We quickly understood that nobles were at the root of this problem.

However, neither Her Highness nor I believed that nobles were unnecessary or harmful.

I share the same view as Her Highness on this matter.

I’ve heard from Her Highness that His Majesty, her father, thinks similarly.

However, there seems to be a slight difference in opinion between Her Highness and His Majesty regarding the solution. By the time she was finishing her secondary education, Her Highness decided to pursue her own path.

From what I’ve heard from Her Highness, His Majesty’s idea is to expand his own faction and use that power to control the nobles.

But that approach won’t bring relief to the common people anytime soon.

That’s what Her Highness seems to think.

In any case, we continued to have many discussions and considered what should be done.

When it came time to decide our future paths, Her Highness resolved to address the country’s security issues first.

Looking back now, I believe she came to this decision after learning about the reality of pirate attacks in the country’s frontier regions and understanding the urgency of the situation.

I’ve heard that the security in our country’s frontier regions is indescribably terrible.

The safety of officials dispatched to particularly inconvenient colonies on the frontier is constantly threatened. I’ve heard that in places where people of non-noble, lowly origins are sent, one must be prepared to die in the line of duty to serve there.

I also think her choice was influenced by her determination to carry on the will of Admiral Bruce, whom she deeply respects.

During Admiral Bruce’s lifetime, the police were responsible for planetary and colony security, while the space forces handled everything else in space.

Of course, nobles had their private armies in their territories and were responsible for dealing with pirates roaming space, but in reality, this wasn’t happening.

Her Highness the Third Princess finds it very regrettable that this situation remains unchanged even now.

In any case, with the space forces prioritizing national defense due to skirmishes with hostile neighboring countries, internal security tends to be neglected.

Before retiring from the military, Admiral Bruce created the Capital Space Guard, commonly known as the Coast Guard, putting himself at the forefront to at least protect the area around the capital.

I’ve heard that Admiral Bruce’s idea was to accumulate know-how based on the experience gained in the Coast Guard he founded, and by spreading this to the noble armies in various regions, he thought it would have a tremendous effect on maintaining domestic security, especially in cracking down on pirates, without relying on the military.

Thanks to the established Coast Guard, we have succeeded in maintaining security around the capital to an extent incomparable to before. However, looking elsewhere, the situation seems to have become even worse.

I won’t dwell on what Admiral Bruce failed to consider, but in discussions with the Princess, we exchanged opinions on this matter many times.

The nobles are not doing their job.

I think this sums it up in one sentence.

So, the Princess was working on a concept for a new organization to at least eradicate pirates.

One day, as I was nearing the end of my higher education, I had my first argument with the Princess.

It was because, for the first time, we disagreed about our respective future paths.

The Princess seemed to think that I would study the same subjects as her at university and continue to serve as her attendant, but I told her that I wanted to become her sword and protect her.

My family has produced military personnel for generations.

My father holds the rank of general in the Space Force, and I occasionally hear rumors that my brother, who graduated from an elite officer training school with excellent grades, is now assigned to the First Fleet and is considered promising for the future.

I wanted to follow in the footsteps of my father and brother.

I don’t know about the distant past, but in this day and age, there are many excellent female soldiers, and more than one or two women have been appointed as generals.

So, it’s not particularly unusual for me to aspire to be a soldier… or so I’d like to say, but for someone like me, a child of nobility – not just a knight baronet sometimes considered a lower noble, but a viscount ranked higher among the lower nobility, with my father’s achievements and my brother potentially elevating us to the upper noble rank of count with just one more accomplishment – it seems to be quite rare.

Children of nobility like myself would normally learn etiquette and live within noble society, but I deliberately chose to become a soldier.

It seems the Princess felt this as something akin to betrayal.

“Karin. I thought you would always help me.”

“Yes, my feelings haven’t changed. I want to be of use to you, Your Highness.”

“Then why become a soldier? If you aimed to be an official, I would understand…”

“Indeed, competent officials in high positions will be necessary in the future. However, what Your Highness is trying to do requires power. I feel the need to advance in the military and command at least a squadron.”

“Will the country last until then?”

“Certainly, that worry will always be there, but military power is absolutely necessary. What Your Highness needs requires military power, but where else do you think you can get that power from besides me?”

“…I understand. I comprehend your feelings, Karin. From now on, it’s a race. Whether my organization can be established before the country falls, or whether you can bring me a squadron from the military.”

“Yes, Your Highness. I will definitely bring military power to you. Don’t worry, I won’t keep you waiting long. Let’s say ten years – in ten years, I’ll come running to your side.”

“Ten years… it seems long, but I’m sure the time will pass quickly.”

I remember having such a conversation in the past. The Princess, much faster than I predicted, established her own organization in just a few years, not ten, and with achievements that no one could complain about.

Right before my eyes, Her Highness received the imperial command from His Majesty.

Although it’s still a preparatory office, she received the imperial command as the director of an organization called the [Interstellar Criminal Police Organization].

Today, I’ve managed to get leave from the military, somewhat forcefully, and am participating in this ceremony at the Princess’s invitation.

I, too, wish to hasten to Her Highness’s side soon.

Afterword

Hello, this is Norashiro.

I am grateful that you have read this book to the end.

I am thankful that I can publish this work as part of a series, which is entirely due to the support of readers who encourage my works.

This series has now reached its second volume.

Thanks to your support, the first volume received quite good ratings on a certain sales site.

As one review on that site titled “Prologue to a Space Opera” mentioned, the first volume had strong introductory elements.

In this book, the protagonists finally show their true abilities, or rather, their absurdity accelerates in their activities.

In the first volume, the protagonist Nao was involved in battles with pirates, but in this volume, with a change in affiliation, they finally start actively searching for and subjugating pirates on their own.

This volume also includes space battles, which were hardly written about in the first volume, and I pride myself on including elements that can truly be called space opera.

Although it was unavoidable in the story, there are some unpleasant scenes, but I would be fulfilled as a writer if you could enjoy the scenes where the protagonists grow with the help of those around them, even in such tragic situations.

The series will still continue.

Please immerse yourself in the world of space opera and enjoy a moment of happiness.

The world is deepening into autumn, and though it would usually be early winter by now, perhaps due to the warm winter, there are still many places in the city where the autumn colors are beautiful.

Amidst this, the ginkgo trees at Jingu Shrine has already changed to its winter appearance, and I took a stroll through it.

As it is the “autumn for reading,” why not try curling up with a book in a kotatsu on a cold winter day?

After strolling through the Jingu trees about to welcome early winter
