Prologue
Before I realized it, my eyes were always following him.
For example, when we passed each other in the hallway.
For example, when he was dozing off in class.
For example, when he stared sleepily out the window from his seat.
For example, when he stuffed his cheeks with lunch up on the rooftop.
Looking back on it now, I think I was watching him in just about every situation.
Strangely enough, none of our classmates ever seemed to be looking at him.
Sure, they might glance at him from time to time, or their eyes might happen to meet his, but I don’t think anyone truly took interest in him….Well, there is Kazamiya-san, who sits one seat behind him. But she’s an exception. At least when it comes to interest as the opposite sex.
…It was only me.
Only I knew about his charm.
There were even times when I indulged in that sense of being special. Of course, I could never say something like, “I’m glad he’s always alone.” I felt guilty about it too, but… the superiority of knowing something no one else knew made me happy.
Especially when I had lunch with him on the rooftop. That’s when I felt it the most.
But lately, that special feeling—my special connection—is slowly fading.
And that, in itself, is something to be happy about, I suppose… but my feelings are complicated.
