A Long Day for (Part of) the Royal Family
The royal palace of the Diamond Kingdom greets another uneventful morning.
At 6 AM, one of the chamberlains heads to His Majesty’s bedroom for the morning greeting.
This has become customary unless His Majesty spends the night in one of the three queen consorts’ rooms.
His Majesty visits each queen consort once a week, so he spends about half the week’s nights alone in his bedroom.
Actually, this morning was unplanned. Last night, His Majesty worked late into the night and had to suddenly inform the Third Queen Consort of the change in plans.
While not entirely uncommon, it’s still rare. Usually, nights are spent according to pre-arranged schedules.
This morning, despite the unplanned situation, the chamberlain goes about the usual greeting and assists His Majesty with preparations.
Then, something unusual happens.
The Chief Chamberlain directly visits His Majesty’s bedroom.
“Good morning, Your Majesty.”
“Ah, Chief Chamberlain. Has something happened?”
“Yes, we just received a message from the Third Princess.”
Indeed, His Majesty had been working late last night because the Interstellar Criminal Police Organization Preparatory Office, led by the Third Princess, had set out to subdue a major pirate stronghold.
Normally, a later report would suffice, but the Third Princess herself had announced her intention to visit the stronghold.
Not only was it problematic for the Princess to directly visit a pirate stronghold, but His Majesty was surprised to learn from the military that she had requested their cooperation and was acting alongside them even before the suppression began.
Upon hearing the report, His Majesty reportedly muttered “That troublemaker” in front of the chamberlains.
However, His Majesty is also a parent and had been working late out of concern for the Third Princess.
Now, the Chief Chamberlain reports that the Third Princess has contacted them to inform that the pirate stronghold has been successfully subdued.
Yet, the subsequent report is somewhat concerning.
According to the Chief Chamberlain, there’s a request for assistance from the Audit Office to the newly subdued ex-pirate stronghold.
While the decision to grant the Audit Office’s assistance request is the Audit Office Director’s job and not something even His Majesty should interfere with, it’s still worrying.
“A request for Audit Office assistance, you say. Is nobility involved? And…”
“Yes, Your Majesty. The Audit Office Director has already dispatched subordinates, borrowing a ship from the military to rush there.”
“They’ve already departed?”
“Yes, it seems the Princess had contacted them last night, and they just left moments ago.”
“Such urgency… this is becoming increasingly suspicious. Please follow up on this. We can’t afford to fall behind.”
His Majesty anticipated that if nobility were involved in the pirate subjugation, it could cause quite a stir.
So, deciding to keep a closer eye on this matter, he concluded the conversation with the Chief Chamberlain.
At 7 AM, His Majesty has breakfast with the Queen Consorts as usual, and today he enters his office a bit earlier than normal.
At 8 AM, he begins the daily approval tasks.
At this hour, with government officials not yet at work, he tackles the backlog of non-urgent approvals.
At 9 AM, as government offices begin their workday, the Audit Office Director requests an urgent meeting.
Normally, His Majesty is in his office during the morning, especially right after work begins.
The Audit Office Director aimed for this timing in requesting the meeting.
In the Director’s judgment, while the matter requires prompt reporting, its urgency is debatable. So when the Princess contacted him late last night, he decided to visit at this hour.
Usually, it’s not easy to secure a meeting with His Majesty or any high-ranking government official.
However, while considerable time has passed since the core of this country began to rot, it hasn’t completely decayed. Thus, the method for urgent communication with His Majesty is still alive.
The Chief Chamberlain, the heads of the military including the Space Force, and the Director of the Audit Office are allowed impromptu visits.
This custom dates back to long before the country’s founding, ensuring that reports on matters shaking the nation’s foundations can swiftly reach the top.
Unexpected outbreaks of war, large-scale terrorist attacks, or major rebellions by nobles – if those responsible for such nation-shaking events had to wait their turn to report to His Majesty, the country would surely perish.
In fact, many countries that have fallen throughout history are said to have failed due to poor information transmission.
In the Diamond Kingdom, the nobles have not yet completely monopolized state affairs.
Returning to the matter at hand, upon meeting His Majesty, the Audit Office Director immediately requests everyone else to leave. He doesn’t utter a word until only His Majesty and the Chief Chamberlain remain in the office.
“Is this satisfactory, Director?”
“Thank you, Your Majesty.”
“Now then, what’s so important that you’ve gone to such lengths?”
In response to His Majesty’s inquiry, the Director begins to report the information received last night, holding nothing back.
As he listens to the report, His Majesty’s expression gradually darkens.
“Regarding this report, I’d like to call in some people. Can you repeat it?”
“Given the nature of this matter, I’d prefer to limit the number of people privy to this information, but…”
The Director shows some resistance, but upon learning of His Majesty’s choices, he seems to understand.
At 9:45 AM, a meeting begins with four additional attendees chosen by His Majesty: the Space Force Commander, the Space Force Personnel Bureau Chief, the Chief Chamberlain, and the Space Force Police Chief.
These four are all individuals His Majesty trusts deeply, almost like confidants.
“Wait a moment, Audit Office Director. You’re saying the pirates were involved in human trafficking? And that high-ranking Space Force officials were involved?”
Major General Dordon, the Personnel Bureau Chief, speaks up upon hearing the report.
“Admiral, that’s not quite accurate. While it does amount to human trafficking, the reality is far more horrific – it involves the sale of organs from living humans.”
“Is… is there evidence?”
“Yes, they directly witnessed a boy whose heart had been removed. Apparently, the boy passed away shortly after.”
“Ah…”
Someone involuntarily lets out a gasp.
The atmosphere in the room grows dark and heavy.
“Is it true that the military is involved?”
His Majesty questions the Director amidst the gloomy atmosphere.
“Yes, the Princess herself has apparently examined the evidence directly. That’s why she’s requested assistance from the Audit Office.”
From there, a long meeting ensues.
Normally, this time would be spent on His Majesty’s routine task of processing approval documents, but ever since the Audit Office Director’s visit, all other access has been cut off.
The department responsible for His Majesty’s general approval duties begins to stir at this unusual situation.
Young bureaucrats panic at the sudden inability to access His Majesty.
A veteran bureaucrat calms them down.
“You young ones might not have experienced this, but it happens very rarely. The last time I experienced something like this was when war broke out at the border.”
“What? Does that mean war is…”
“Don’t be ridiculous. This country has been at war since before I was born. We haven’t even reached a ceasefire, let alone a truce, with the Feanor faction. We’re still very much at war, though there hasn’t been any large-scale conflict in recent years.”
As such conversations take place, word comes from the Chief Chamberlain that all meetings with His Majesty are prohibited for the time being.
The entire palace begins to stir with a feeling of impending war.
At 2 PM, an interim report arrives for the Director from the auditors heading to the Third Princess’s location.
A list containing names of military bigwigs is included.
An auditor rushes to deliver this to the Director, who is still in the meeting with His Majesty.
At 2:30 PM, the auditor reports these findings to the meeting participants.
“Wait a moment, this is beyond what we…”
The Space Force Commander is shocked by the extent of the situation.
“Indeed, while they’re connected to suspicious nobles, for it to go this far…”
“With this level of contamination, the military can’t possibly handle pirate subjugation.”
“The same goes for the Coast Guard under the Space Force.”
Everyone is temporarily stunned by the shock, but by 3 PM, they begin discussing countermeasures again.
However, with the military so severely compromised, developing strategies won’t be easy.
Around 9 PM, they finally agree to suspend the authority of those named and secure their persons while trying not to provoke the nobles too much.
“Still, no matter what we do, the nobles will make a fuss.”
The meeting continues endlessly until Major General Dodon comes up with an ingenious plan.
“Your Majesty, if we could divert the nobles’ attention elsewhere, we might be able to secure the suspects, but…”
“Divert their attention? Do you have something in mind, Your Excellency?”
“Yes, why don’t we have the Third Princess, who’s achieved this feat, step up?”
“What do you mean?”
“How about officially establishing Her Highness’s preparatory office as a government agency, and appointing Her Highness at ministerial level? Fortunately, Her Highness has been touring various places and promoting herself actively, so it should be easy to divert the nobles’ attention there.”
“Hold on, no matter how much we want to divert attention, we can’t establish an agency so quickly.”
“That’s why I suggest we widely announce a deadline for its establishment.”
“…That’s a clever idea. She’s already achieved undeniable accomplishments, and with this recent incident, no one could oppose it.”
“Wait a moment. My daughter’s matter has already been announced.”
“Ah, that’s right.”
This plan is shelved as it has already been announced.
In the end, everyone leaves His Majesty’s office after the meeting concludes past 2 AM the next day.
