Traveling Through The Galaxy Together Volume 1 Epilogue + Afterword

Epilogue: Rare Humans = Earthlings

When you’re among the stars, it’s hard to realize, but the edge of the sky, the deep abyss of space, is literally endless.

The tenacity of life sometimes transcends even the planets that gave birth to it.

And among them, the Earthlings became a race that fell quite behind and met a tragic end.

“Captain, we’ve caught a signal. That ship has reactions from two Earthlings.”

“Understood. Let’s go say hello, shall we?”

Far, far away from their homeland.

Having lost most of their civilization, the Earthlings were forced to abandon their mother planet.

“Hey, what are you trying to do?! That’s dangerous!”

“Yes, yes, hello, hello. There are two Earthlings on your ship, right? I have a few things I’d like to confirm, so would you mind answering?”

“What? Don’t tell me you’re—!”

An agitated voice rises from the communication line.

The other ship is clearly larger than this one, but they show no signs of underestimating us.

Kaito-Crouch. The only Earthlings with the status of a third-class citizen Enek-Ragif in the Federation, which maintains a formidable influence in this galaxy. And he was becoming known for going around protecting Earthlings who had lost their mother planet.

“This is Captain Kaito of the Federation combat vessel Queen Bee. Those Earthlings you’re carrying are suspected of being illegally traded by the Divine people. What do you say to that?”

“Don’t be ridiculous, we’re—”

“It would be better not to say something as sleepy as ‘we haven’t signed the Federation law.’ You wouldn’t want to end up like the Zanigaliu Grand Fleet, would you?”

“You…! Don’t tell me that was actually true!?”

When mentioning a recent major confrontation, quite panicked voices rise from the other end of the communication.

Kaito detached the VIP passenger ship he had been towing behind. This ship, remotely operated by Emotion, is borrowed from the Federation government to carry the Earthlings they rescue.

He transitions the worker bees to combat readiness. Moving deliberately slowly is to wait for the opponent to yield before entering combat. Even if they don’t belong to the Federation, just because they bought Earthlings doesn’t necessarily make them enemies.

“Wait! Stand down your combat stance. We’ll hand over the two individuals. Is that acceptable?”

“A wise decision. I appreciate it.”

“However, I’d like to make it a condition that your ship doesn’t approach ours any further. If you could send your passenger ship over here, we’ll put the Earthlings on board and then withdraw. Is that alright?”

“That’s fine. However, neither of you move until I confirm that the Earthlings have safely boarded. Those are my conditions.”

“Understood.”

A tense exchange. As the passenger ship approaches their vessel, Emotion begins monitoring using the passenger ship’s functions.

The gangway connects the ships, and they wait for a while. The gangway is retracted, and it’s clear that Emotion has lowered his guard.

“Captain Kaito. We’ve secured the two individuals. There don’t seem to be any traps. I’ve contacted the Federation security fleet, so an escort should arrive soon.”

“Understood. Then let’s wait for a while… Confirmed. You’re free to go.”

He connects with the other ship and communicates their release.

“…Aren’t you going to sink us?”

“I have no intention of going that far. Next time you want Earthlings on board, hire them officially instead of buying them. Then we won’t have to go through this charade.”

“We’ll do that. I promise we won’t deal with the Divine people from now on. See you around.”

There was no time to say that wasn’t necessary.

While watching the ship crawl away in haste, Kaito waits for the ship carrying the Earthlings to rejoin them.

“Good grief, I wonder when we’ll be able to freely travel this galaxy.”

“It probably won’t be that far in the future. Besides, it’s kind of like sightseeing in a way, isn’t it?”

“That’s true. And we have all the time in the world.”

“Yes. The security fleet has arrived.”

Emotion has really adapted well.

Kaito entrusts the rescued Earthlings, along with the passenger ship, to the security fleet. After brief greetings, he makes his ship soar toward the next region of space.

Afterword

Hello everyone, I’m Sakaori Task.

I’m pleased to announce that this work “Ginga Hobo Futari Tabi (Traveling through the galaxy together)” has received the Grand Prize in the Entertainment General Category of the 9th Kakuyomu Web Novel Contest and is now being published.

Did you enjoy following the journey of Kaito and Emotion? After starting the serial publication on the web, I received unexpected praise that encouraged me to continue updating daily for about half a year, resulting in approximately 800,000 characters on Kakuyomu. If you’re interested, please feel free to check it out to pass your time.

I’ve been participating since the first Kakuyomu Contest, mainly focusing on isekai fantasy and contemporary fantasy. If you’re wondering why I decided to challenge the Kakuyomu Contest with SF this time, it’s simply because the idea came to me. It was a strange feeling, as if I had received a radio transmission.

What I was conscious of while writing was to “avoid writing in detail about technologies that haven’t been realized in society or theories that haven’t been discovered.” In fact, I haven’t read that many SF works until now.

I tried to minimize elaborate ideas and gimmicks, leaving mysterious things mysterious and amazing technology vaguely amazing. Like when I was a child, enjoying SF anime without really understanding it.

The concept of the work was “SF that makes people think ‘yeah, this is just right.'” If anyone who reads my work feels that way, that would make me happiest.

As mentioned in the critique of my work in the Kakuyomu Contest, I sincerely hope that a movement of web-originated SF entertainment novels will also emerge in Japan. As the critique stated, whether my work can make its presence felt depends on my future efforts. I will do my best to live up to the expectations placed on me. I look forward to your continued support.

By the way, I have more and more people to thank. First, the readers who have supported my work since its web days.

Mr. Tabata and Mr. M, who selected my work and consulted with me during the revision process.

Mr. Susumu Kuroi, who did the illustrations.

And finally, I sincerely thank you, who holds this book in your hands.

October 2024, Sakaori Task
