Afterwards, they split into groups – one making prototypes of the sky lanterns using the procured samples, and another preparing decorations for inside the school, pamphlets, and so on. Each did their respective tasks.
This hotel was exclusively booked for their group. Besides the knights guarding them, Ruben’s butler and maids, the only others present were the hotel staff like the manager and chefs.
The children preparing for the school festival at this luxurious, quiet mountaintop hotel must have surprised the hotel side.
Raze was on decoration duty, simply cutting and pasting to make numerous star shapes.
She also collaborated with Claude to improvise a device using magic commonly seen in crackers, generating an illusion to make stars fall from the ceiling. This was planned for installation on the staircase.
“Yeah, not bad at all.”
“We did a good job.”
They finished by the time evening fell and the test run went smoothly. The design wasn’t overly complex, so they were able to complete it sooner than expected. Though anxious about what they could accomplish in just two and a half days, Raze felt relieved to have made tangible progress.
“Amazing! So pretty!”
“Folia, we’ve completed our part too.”
“Yeah! The sky lanterns are ready too!”
The magic development group with Folia and Addis had continued working on the sky lanterns in the afternoon. Returning from the terrace, they looked accomplished.
“The pamphlet layout and materials for guests are done too!”
Carne and Ruben, in charge of documents, also seemed to have wrapped up. So everyone gathered to witness the prototype sky lantern being set off.
They went outside as the sky quickly darkened. Folia and Luca lit the single completed lantern.
“Alright, sending it up.”
At Luca’s words, it gently floated up towards the heavens.
“Ah…!”
The lantern smoothly ascended into the sky before stopping midair.
Seeing the first step succeed, Carne gasped and covered her mouth with her hand.
“We can adjust the stopping height too. We could have it stay like this, perform a dance routine, and add other recreations in between.”
Luca said so while using magic to create a light to check his pocket watch.
“For now, the one we just sent up is set to dissipate in three minutes.”
The operating members all gazed upwards at the hovering sky lantern.
“What about safety concerns from the melting candle wax?”
“The catchment area is large enough, so it’ll be fine. Even with wind, there won’t be any issues. Addis.”
Ruben, arms crossed with a hand on his chin, questioned Addis after Luca. Addis manifested wind magic at Luca’s call, blowing strong gusts from all directions at the lantern.
“You’re hitting it with pretty fierce winds. It shouldn’t fly away even in a typhoon?”
“As expected.”
Ruben seemed impressed, while Luca smirked, “Not yet.”
“Try soaking it with water magic.”
It was a challenge for Ruben, skilled with water magic.
“Everyone step back a bit.”
Saying so, Ruben pointed a hand at the lantern, forming a ball of water that rained down like a waterfall.
“You’re not holding back, are you!”
Ian chuckled wryly as Ruben unleashed magic without restraint.
Yet the lantern remained afloat without issue, stunning everyone.
“It’ll dissipate soon!”
At Folia’s reminder, they all tensely watched the finale.
The lantern hovered precisely three minutes before the paper burned away, leaving not even ash as it vanished into the sky.
“–Amazing.”
Raze uttered at last.
It was now a full-fledged invention, a type of magical device. Not only floating in the air, withstanding rain and wind, but dissipating at the set time without a trace – combining all those workings was sheer genius. Mastering the comprehensive magic required bordered on masterful talent.
“Well…I just applied the principles from the ‘Toymaker of Death’s’ published theory on magical devices…”
“You, you read that paper rumored to require at least five years just to understand all the cited academic fields?!”
“Yeah, but…I was already…familiar with that paper…”
Raze recalled an assistant of the brilliant inventor once complaining that unknown terminology appeared so frequently in the paper that it was terrifying. She had tried reading it once but quickly gave up, unable to make any sense of it from the start.
So this was the true extent of Luca’s talent. She had realized he seemed to have mastered magic, but his forte truly lay in magical device development.
“We should include the sky lantern’s production process in the pamphlet if possible.”
Raze turned back towards Ruben and Carne.
“That’s a good idea to consider.”
“We’ll need to interview the process later.”
“Eh, anyone could have done this much…”
“No, they couldn’t.”
Folia and Raze’s voices overlapped.
(I didn’t interact much with Mr. Strange, but if he learns of Luca’s skills, even Sergio might take an interest…)
This was an unexpected boon. If Luca was interested in the “Toymaker of Death” Sergio Habermas’s thesis, showing the pamphlet to Sergio could be worthwhile.
The military’s research facilities pioneered magical devices and spell development. Luca may end up with an acquaintance in a similar future workplace, something Raze pondered as she observed them illuminated by the hotel lights.
Then,
BANG!
A shimmering flower blossomed in the night sky she had been gazing at.
“–Fireworks?”
Everyone looked up, stunned, as someone muttered in surprise.
Bang, bang. More fireworks followed in rapid succession, captivating them all.
“There seems to be a fireworks display going on at the nearby lake.”
“Ah, so it’s today.”
A butler informed Ruben, who had been standing by.
“They can be well seen from this hotel. How about enjoying dinner while viewing the fireworks?”
It had already become dinner time. Caught off guard by how quickly time flew, they were distracted as butlers and maids appeared, setting tables on the terrace and serving dishes.
“Outdoor dining is so wonderful!”
Even Carne rarely had such open-air dining experiences, her voice brimming with delight.
Raze savored her final vacation dinner along with the ambiance – plump, jumbo shrimp, rich fish sashimi, and premium cut meats. Mentally wondering which was actually the main, she relished every bite while chatting and reminiscing about childhood with her companions over the sumptuous meal.
“Next year will be our last summer break, huh?”
Ian lamented wistfully.
“The summer and winter this year aren’t over yet, Ian.”

“Yeah, but I want to do lots more stuff together with everyone. Me!”
Feeling time was limited, he responded to Luca seated beside him.
“I don’t know if I’ll be on the operations committee next year, but let’s all get together for fun trips! I want to go to the beach too!”
Ian raised his wristband of friendship bracelets, setting his sights on Raze.
“That does sound nice. A barbecue could be really fun too!”
“And I wish to ride a high-speed boat!”
Carne surprised Raze by expressing a desire for what essentially amounts to a banana boat ride in her previous world.
“If Carne wants it, I’ll make the arrangements.”
“……..”
Her fiance, operating as usual.
“Before that, the Star Festival is the day after tomorrow. I’m looking forward to the costumes this year too.”
“Y-Yes…”
Raze had grown numb to his sweet indulgences.
“…But Raze-chan and Addis-sama can’t make it again this year, can you…”
Hearing about the festival, Folia wilted dejectedly.
“Sorry, we still have work that needs doing.”
“Ah, you don’t need to apologize! I know everyone’s busy…”
Seeing Folia’s genuine disappointment tugged at Raze’s heartstrings.
Steeling her resolve, she decided:
“–Next year, let’s go to the Star Festival together.”
With next summer being their last as students, she would make sure to get that time off.
“…! Yeah!! It’s a promise!”
Recognizing Raze’s sincere gaze, Folia beamed wholeheartedly. Raze nodded firmly in affirmation.
Envisioning next summer’s Star Festival, she squinted at the fleeting fireworks painting the night sky–.
