Mob No. 127: “Ugh… why do I have to team up with someone like this?! Sigh… I’m so jealous of Lilin-chan, who gets to partner with Shiora-chan!”
Right after leaving the mercenary guild, I headed to [Animenber], where I lucked out—not only snagging the latest volume of [Cursed Death Battles], but also the new [Assassin×Family] release.
The remastered collection of the [Steel Shaft Series] games had also just dropped, so I grabbed that too.
After stocking up on extra groceries, restocking hygiene supplies, and other miscellaneous shopping, I boarded a ship to the job site.
The destination was a facility-centric colonial work base in the Zanzaha Sector, anchored around the planet Gulpei, which served as the hub for security patrols. Unsurprisingly, plenty of others had taken the job too—
including that rookie, Miss Shiora Dilopers.
She’d skyrocketed in prominence in a short time, already reaching Rook-Class and apparently leading a group of talented young mercenaries. Typical extrovert energy, I guess.
I hadn’t planned to take this job, but apparently, there were quite a few long-term applicants under similar contracts.
But above all, there was something that surprised everyone.
Two Queen-Class mercs were on-site: Katí Alptet, the “Man-Eating Rose” and Talgas Elgaiwa, the “Vulture”
Katí Alptet insists on being called “Beryl Rose,” but her mech’s design—a green body with pearlescent wings and tail, plus a rose motif on the wings—features a center that looks way too much like a fanged maw. Hence, Man-Eating Rose stuck.
(For the record, she herself is a poised, lady-like woman with dark eyes, long black hair, and pale skin.)
Talgas Elgaiwa, on the other hand, is a grizzled middle-aged man with messy blond hair and a beard. His dull-gray mech sports only a vulture insignia.
There is a rumor that he was a former military commander, but it is not certain why he calls himself a vulture, which has a rather bad impression of a carrion-eating animal.
Incidentally, a garrison unit is a military unit with the mission of monitoring its own troops from the rear and forcing them to continue fighting by attacking them if they retreat from battle (flee before the enemy) or surrender (surrender) without orders, which we mercenaries rarely come across.
Of course, they’re free to take any job they want.
But normally, elites like them go for higher-paying gigs.
Not my place to question it, though.
One thing’s certain: I should stay far, far away from both of them.
Not like I’d ever need to chat up Queen-Class legends anyway.
At least the job’s bound to be easier with them around.
Speaking of the job: my short-term security patrol was basically filling in for overworked mercs who hadn’t had leave.
Shiora Dilopers and her crew were likely in the same boat.

I got assigned a shift immediately after arrival.
Long-term hires, meanwhile, were pure reinforcements—slotted into fixed rotations to boost patrol frequency.
Rule: Patrols are two-person teams, with partners assigned by the employer based on compatibility.
My partner? Tenon Karalema, one of Shiora’s hangers-on—a green-eyed, brown-haired girl who started grumbling the second we met.
“Ugh… why do I have to team up with someone like this?! Sigh… I’m so jealous of Lilin-chan, who gets to partner with Shiora-chan!”
Since comms stay live during patrols, her whining was crystal clear.
Probably took this job to qualify for Bishop-Class promotion.
(Tenon’s currently Soldier-Class.)
“Let’s just finish this fast so I can go crush some pirates!”
With that, she zoomed off—ignoring me entirely. Problem: This job’s time-based. Rushing means looping back early just to idle until the next shift.
Worse, she veered way off-route.
If I pointed it out, she’d definitely snap: “Shut up! It’s just a detour! Keep quiet, you fatso!”
But if I didn’t, she’d wander off forever…
“Uh, You’re way off the patrol route.”
“Huh?!”
(We were audio-only—she’d refused to even look at me.) Her startled gasp was audible.
Then, right on cue:
“G-God, you’re so annoying! I knew that! Don’t you dare boss me around!”
was the reply.
Predictable.
Given Shiora’s personality, I’m surprised she tolerates this type. Maybe Tenon’s just faking meekness around her?
Not that Shiora’s easy to read…
After enduring her muttering, we finally completed the loop. Then:
“Hey, take this signal beacon and keep patrolling. I’m gonna go hunt pirates.”
For a second, I flashed back to that bratty noble and the pink-haired girl.
Please tell me she’s not related to either…?
But her plan was impossible.
“The beacon can’t be removed without special tools.”
“Hah?! What kind of crap is that?!”
The signal beacon isn’t just a tracker—it’s a distress marker if we encounter hostiles. Rule: Never detach it during patrols.
She threw a fit, demanding its removal, but after the maintenance crew and control tower also refused, she sulked silently for the rest of the shift.
…Well, at least it was quiet.
Praying I get paired with someone else tomorrow.
