I am no hero of the shadows! Volume 2 Chapter 5 part 1

The First Princess of Alarde Kingdom

Alarde Kingdom

A small nation located west of Lilac Kingdom. While its population and territory are smaller compared to Lilac Kingdom, I should mention upfront that it is not a poor country that lacks prosperity.

This is because most of the nation faces the sea, making it a place where trade flourishes.

Moreover, it is said to have the finest seafood in the continent, and the capital of Alarde Kingdom, also called the “Sea City,” has become a popular tourist destination.

Lilac Kingdom also greatly benefits from their import and export relations, and the two nations maintain favorable relations with each other.

The royal family of that nation consists of only three people: the current king, queen, and the first princess.

Not because the number of royals is small compared to other nations, but Phil, being a person from the neighboring country, was at least aware of their names.

—Sherry-Alarde.

The sole heir to the throne of Alarde Kingdom, and a gifted royal recognized by those around her. Moreover, a young girl so hungry for knowledge that she is called an “Inquirer.”

Such a person was now—

“Apologies for the sudden visit—Phil-Salemabart”

In a separate reception room, a woman sat down and crossed her legs.

Wavy golden long hair. A beautiful and refined face with ruby-colored eyes like gems. She appeared to be a bit older than Phil, perhaps? Her mature demeanor carried an air of inscrutability, like a fog that couldn’t quite be grasped.

As this was an official visit, a thin, pale black dress emphasized her mature atmosphere even further. Her exposed chest exuded an indescribable sensuality.

Behind her stood two people.

They were likely her guards. However, unlike other guards, they didn’t wear armor or similar attire, but rather dressed in casual clothes.

One was a boy with a rough face, wearing only a shirt and pants.

The other was a small white-haired girl dressed in gothic clothing.

They were far too peculiar to call guards. Yet since they appeared in such a place, there was no doubt they held that position.

“That’s fine, but what brings you here? Surely you haven’t come to stage some dramatic reunion with someone you’ve just met for the first time?”

“Hmm, that would be interesting too. Perhaps if I hinted at some special backstory, it would add depth to our future relationship.”

“You think a future relationship will even exist?”

“Isn’t it premature to decide after just meeting face-to-face?”

Perhaps because of the frequent visitors, Phil’s attitude was somewhat cold.

However, the woman across from him didn’t mind and maintained her arrogant demeanor, a smile playing at her lips.

“You’ve probably heard from others already, but let me introduce myself—Sherry-Alarde. Pleased to meet you, Phil-Salemabart-kun.”

“I’m Phil-Salemabart. In any case, welcome to Salemabart Territory.”

He said this without extending his hand.

Both of them were fine with that. However, Sherry made a quip regardless.

“Hmm, how cold. At this rate, you’ll scare a poor young girl on her first meeting. Shouldn’t the man take the lead in warming up the atmosphere in situations like this?”

“If we were in the middle of a date, I might consider it. Right now, you look like nothing more than a salesman who appeared with a mysterious box I know nothing about. My parents taught me to be very careful about fraud.”

“Oh, that reminds me—I haven’t told you my business yet. I must confess, meeting the rumored ‘Hero in the Shadows’ has made me a bit nervous.”

“You’re joking…I’m not the ‘Hero in the Shadows’ or anything—“

“Thank you for helping our nation’s village the other day, by the way. Everyone was grateful. I’d like to repay you—what would you like? Since you’re a man, should I find you a beautiful woman?”

“No way, seriously!? That’s awesome—Wait!”

Sherry’s mouth curved upward into a grin.

Alarde was indeed one of the nations where Phil had intervened in a skirmish with Ilya the other day. The reason for the intervention was that there was a village nearby that could have been affected by the conflict.

Of course, only Alarde Kingdom, the Alm Empire, and the “Heroes in the Shadows” who intervened knew about this.

In other words, admitting it here would be equivalent to admitting that Phil was the “Hero in the Shadows.”

“I’m not the ‘Hero in the Shadows.'”

“You said that awfully happily just a moment ago.”

Phil still didn’t want to admit it.

“Well, whether the person involved admits it or not is ultimately trivial. In the end, what the majority believes becomes the truth. Even if there’s no actual fact behind it, if the majority is satisfied, it becomes truth.”

“That’s a whole new level of fraud speak…At least try to consider how the victim feels.”

“Isn’t it not entirely unfounded damage to reputation then? If so, you’re fine.”

It was precisely this kind of trouble that Phil was worried about, but he couldn’t very well say that in front of the person causing it.

Phil exhaled softly and tried to change the subject quickly.

“So, what’s your actual business then? Did you come to thank me after deciding I’m the ‘Hero in the Shadows’?”

“That’s part of it, but it’s not the main point. It’s more like the appetizer before a full course meal. The main dish is something else.”

Sherry spoke with her lips still curved upward.

“I would very much like for you to become engaged to me.”

The sudden proposition froze the air in the room… or rather, only Phil froze.

At his reaction, Sherry tilted her head.

“Hmm, that’s strange… I’m quite famous in the world, or so I thought, but your reaction is a bit different from what I expected.”

“…No, when you suddenly ask someone to get engaged, it’s normal to go ‘Huh?’ You know? I can’t just say ‘Yay, I’m so happy!’ when we barely have any kind of relationship built up.”

“My appearance is quite refined, or so I believe…”

“Hmm…”

“Hey, stop staring at my chest. Don’t just focus on one part.”

To be fair, she did have quite marvelous breasts.

It was no wonder Phil’s gaze was fixed there. He was thoroughly grateful that his partner wasn’t here.

“…Say, is my charm really only in my chest? Being looked at this way is making me lose confidence in everything I’ve built up until now.”

Setting aside the staring Phil, Sherry asked the two people behind her.

“Huh? Why you askin’ me, Princess? I ain’t got no interest in women in the first place.”

“I-I… d-don’t have… interest in girls… either…? Because… I’m also… a girl…?”

“I was hoping for an objective judgment, but I don’t see women as the opposite sex either.”

Sherry sighed, realizing she’d asked the wrong people.

Though she felt her confidence in her appearance shaken in this situation, objectively speaking, Sherry’s appearance was quite refined. So much so that anyone walking down the street would inevitably turn to look at her.

Phil’s reaction focused solely on her chest perhaps because he’d become desensitized to beautiful girls.

After all, Phil’s surroundings had mysteriously seen an increase in facial attractiveness recently.

“So, why me specifically? I’m grateful for the offer, but surely someone of your caliber could have found someone higher-ranking than a mere count’s son?”

“Staring at my chest and refusing me is quite rude… Well, never mind. Being refused is within my calculations anyway. I never expected to return home victorious.”

Sherry recrossed her legs and spoke.

“One reason is to strengthen our relationship with the ‘Hero in the Shadows,’ who is beloved not just by our nation’s people but by foreign populations as well. Of course, if I were to leave, the country would begin selecting a successor, so they’d need someone to become a husband and join our family instead.”

Alarde Kingdom currently had only Sherry as an heir to the throne.

If she were to marry out of the country, they would have to start searching for an adopted heir from the beginning.

Since the Salemabart noble house couldn’t provide anyone suitable, it was natural that the flow would be for Phil to become a son-in-law joining the family.

“You’re quite honest about it. I’d love to have those other nobles who come with their noses in the air see this and have some humility beaten into them.”

“Say ‘I’d like to make them drink the powder of my fingernails’ instead—that way it wouldn’t just be sexual harassment. My assets are pretty high-value, you know.”

Only Phil could speak of the princess’s chest so boldly.

“My apologies, my mouth got ahead of me…”

“That’s because Phil-Salemabart keeps staring at my chest while speaking.”

“And you said ‘one reason,’ so there must be a second one too. Four would be too much for small-minded Phil-kun to handle, so let’s just stick with two.”

“Don’t worry, there aren’t many—the other reason is that you’re a mage.”

At that statement, Phil’s eyebrows twitched.
