Romelia Senki Volume 3 Chapter 4 part 7

Princess Lelia screamed again, but I couldn’t blame her for fear. We were charging straight into enemy territory—surrounded by hundreds of gleaming blades lunging from all directions. Yet none reached us. Two soldiers flanking us—half a horse-length behind—pierced the skulls and cleaved the guts of any demon who dared strike at us.

I didn’t need to look back. To my right rear was Glen; to my left, Hans. And behind them, five thousand cavalry followed.

We broke through the enemy lines, emerging on the other side unscathed. When I turned, Glen and Hans were right behind me—breathing heavily, their spears and armor stained with blood.

Further back lay the Demon King’s infantry we had just torn through. Countless demon corpses littered the ground—a decent result.

“Incredible… How? How did you do that?”

Princess Lelia sounded both awed and exhilarated.

“Well, why indeed? But I do know one thing—that gap was going to form.”

I had no satisfying answer for her.

Those who command soldiers must have the ability to anticipate the course of battle. This is because, even after issuing an order, there is inevitably a time lag before the soldiers execute it.

Therefore, commanders must consider this time lag and anticipate the course of the battle before issuing orders.

At first, I couldn’t do it either. But after leading from the front, I began to intuit the battlefield—not just its grand movements, but the soldiers’ awareness, their openings, their weaknesses.

I couldn’t explain why I could do this.

My vague response left Princess Lelia dumbfounded.

Shifting my gaze back to the battlefield, I saw Kyle’s reserve forces engaging the Demon King’s army at the hill’s base. The tide was turning in our favor—our central breakthrough had thrown the enemy into disarray.

“Lady Romeria, where next?”

Glen, splattered with blood, burned with fighting spirit.

“Our next target is that.”

I pointed toward the Thunder Dragon Brachio rampaging through the Hovos Federation’s lines,

Brachio guided by a hulking demon clad in blue armor. Behind it marched a thousand armored giants, slaughtering the Federation’s soldiers. Unless the Thunder Dragon Brachio and the armored giant soldiers are defeated, the Hovos Federation’s soldiers cannot be saved.

“Glen, can you take down that dragon?”

“An honor!”

Glen raised his spear eagerly. The real problem was the surrounding armored giants—their defenses were formidable. Worse, they have noticed our presence, and the soldiers in the rear are turning around and reorganizing their defensive formation toward us. The situation is no longer one where we can attack from behind and easily defeat them.

“The enemy is heavily armored. We’ll use the Ninth Wave Tide Formation. Hans, reform the ranks!”

“Understood! Formation shift—Ninth Wave Tide! Move!”

At my command, the cavalry swiftly rearranged into nine successive waves. Glen, Hans, and I took position at the rearmost ninth line.

“Hey, what’s the plan?”

Princess Lelia, the only one unaware of the tactic, looked puzzled.

“You’ll see. First wave—charge!”

At my command, the hundred cavalrymen in formation charge toward the Demon King’s armored giant soldiers.

The hundred cavalrymen collide with the armored giant soldiers but cannot break their defense, quickly turning around and retreating.

“Second wave—charge!”

I immediately sent the next wave—this time two hundred strong.

“Huh? Just a standard wave attack?”

Princess Lelia muttered, unimpressed.

Indeed, the Ninth Wave Formation is a wave attack divided into nine parts. However, while the first wave was a charge of a hundred men, the second wave is reinforced to two hundred. The third and fourth waves increase in numbers, and the final ninth wave is an attack that allocates all remaining forces.

Wave after wave crashed against the enemy, but the giants endured until the eighth. Yet my final wave was the strongest.

“Ninth Wave—charge! Follow me!”

I issue the command to the soldiers and urge the horses to gallop at full speed.

Standing at the forefront of the cavalry, I observe the ranks of armored giant soldiers who have withstood the wave attacks.

I had learned to spot an enemy’s openings and predict the flow of battle. But against a foe who fortified their defenses, leaving no gaps to exploit—well, if there were no openings, I would just have to create them.

The relentless, wave-like assaults had begun to wear down even the ironclad defenses of the Armored Giant Troops. One of the Demonkin was wounded, teetering on the verge of collapse.

“There!”

I spurred my horse into a charge, aiming straight for the faltering warrior.

The Demonkin couldn’t withstand the impact—my steed plowed into him, crushing him beneath its hooves. I felt the sickening crunch of bone and flesh beneath me, but the enemy’s formation had now been breached.

Another Armored Giant turned its spear toward us, ready to skewer me mid-charge.

“Don’t you dare get near Lady Romelia!”

“That’s right!”

Glen swept aside the spear and cut down the giant, while Hans aimed precise thrusts into the gaps of its armor. With the hole opened by Romelia’s two guards, the following cavalry poured in like an avalanche.

“We’re fine here now. Glen! You—handle the dragon!”

Once I confirmed the area was secure with reinforcements arriving, I pointed toward the Thunder Dragon Brachio.

“Understood!”

“Hans, you go with him.”

Glen eagerly rushed toward Brachio, but I still felt uneasy sending him alone. Unfastening the utility belt with pouches I wore over my armor, I tossed it to Hans.

“It contains explosive magic stones. Use them well.”

Hans, who had received my pouch, nodded and chased after Glen.

“Hey, are those two really going to be okay?”

Princess Lelia must have doubted whether just those two could take down the massive Thunder Dragon Brachio.

“I believe those two will be just fine.”

I watched over Glen and Hans.

Glen, entrusted with slaying the Thunder Dragon Brachio, rode his horse with great enthusiasm, approaching from the dragon’s left flank. Then, with a mighty thrust of his prized spear, he struck the pillar-like left hind leg.

But the Thunder Dragon Brachio didn’t even flinch—as if it barely felt a tickle—and continued its lumbering stride without pause.

“Damn it, this slow bastard!”

Glen readied his spear for another strike, but an onslaught of arrows rained down from above, cutting his attack short. A demon warrior, leaning out from a large basket strapped to Brachio’s back, had fired arrows at him.

“Shut the hell up!”

Glen glared at the archer—only for a spear to suddenly pierce through the demon’s stomach. The lifeless body tumbled from the basket. The spear had been thrown by Hans.

“Glen, this is too much for just one person.”

“Tch, are you saying I can’t handle it alone?”

Glen shot me a glance. I nodded back in encouragement.

“Glen, I think you could do it alone, but we need to take this dragon down quickly.”

“Fine, fine. First, we gotta deal with the demons up top. I’ll climb up—distract it for me.”

Though Glen clicked his tongue in annoyance, he wasn’t foolish enough to refuse his comrade’s support. Hans nodded at his instructions, drew his sword, and spurred his horse toward Brachio’s right foreleg. With a sharp slash, he struck the thick, pillar-like limb—but the dragon’s tough hide repelled the blade, not even drawing blood. Undeterred, Hans struck the same spot again.

The second attack drew blood, but to the colossal Thunder Dragon Brachio, it was little more than a scratch. Still, the pain must have registered, as the beast lowered its long neck, peering down at its own feet.

“Well, hello there.”

Hans greeted Brachio as their eyes met. In response, the dragon tried to crush him underfoot.

A single strike from Brachio’s hammer-like legs could send a man flying with just a glancing blow—yet Hans expertly maneuvered his horse, dancing around the stomping feet with nimble evasion.

As Brachio stamped in place, the blue-armored demon holding its reins noticed Hans and fired an arrow.

Pelted by arrows, Hans had no choice but to retreat from beneath the dragon.

I turned my attention to Glen instead. While Hans had drawn the demons’ focus, Glen had guided his horse alongside Brachio’s left leg. Securing his spear to his belt, he leaped onto the thick thigh and scaled the beast’s side.

Once on its back, Glen swiftly drew his spear. The archers in the basket spotted him and frantically turned their bows—but Glen was faster. He closed the distance in a flash, skewering demons one after another and flinging them from the basket.

“Glen! Above you!”

As Glen finished clearing the archers, I pointed upward in warning.

Glen noticed the shadow falling over him and raised his spear. Looking up, he saw a blue-armored demonkin poised to strike, spear at the ready as he leaped down.

Though Glen blocked the demonkin’s thrust, the massive warrior’s terrifying strength sent Glen’s body flying backward.

Sent sprawling, Glen clung to the Thunder Dragon Brachio’s back as he glared up at his opponent.

The demonkin clad in blue armor was the soldier who’d been holding Brachio’s reins. Likely a named warrior among their kind – he stood a full head taller than other demonkin, his bulging muscles visible even beneath his armor.

The giant demonkin swung his spear like it was a mere twig as he advanced on Glen.

Glen rose to his feet, slashing with his spear, but the attacking demonkin easily deflected his strikes.

The massive warrior wielded his spear with brute strength. Though Glen resisted with all his might, he was gradually overpowered and forced backward.

“Hey, is he okay?!”

Princess Lelia’s trembling voice came from behind me, but all we could do now was watch.
