Until he becomes my cute younger brother and then my younger sister
Mileyana-Drakken
Upon hearing the news that Shaun had been shot with a stun gun and lost consciousness, we sisters immediately headed to the hospital in Orlangea.
Fortunately, his life was not in danger, but he remained unconscious, left to regain consciousness naturally over time.
Tina and Sara were worried but angry at the culprit, while I looked at the sleeping Shaun and reminisced about the past.
We sisters first met him when he was just a newborn baby – my sister Tinarossa was 173 years old, I was 218, and our elder sister Sarafinia was 255.
He was Shaun-Lyatt, the tiny newborn grandson of Balkus-Lyatt, a friend of our grandfather’s.
Before we knew it, five years had passed and the little boy enjoyed teasing that he wanted to make one of us big sisters his bride someday. But he also learned military martial arts from my ex-soldier mother Richelina-Drakken, as well as cooking and housekeeping from his own mother and grandmother.
When Shaun became a middle-schooler, we learned that as a Sumerian, he could transform between both male and female forms. He also became skilled at cooking delicious meals that captivated even us Draconian people.
When his parents passed away, there was talk of the Drakken family taking him in, but this did not happen due to his grandfather Balks still being alive and Shaun’s own wishes.
Now as a young adult, he takes pride in his work as an accomplished cargo transporter.
His cooking skills have grown tremendously, enough to seriously consider bringing him into the Drakken household.
We have close family-like ties with Shaun, but when I first met him and the Lyatt family, I did not view them very favorably.
To us long-lived Draconian people, a human life is far too short. Even as they age and pass away before our eyes, we remain virtually unchanged from when we first met them.
This must seem extremely cruel and demeaning to them.
And for us Draconians as well, it is difficult to watch those born after us grow, mature, age and ultimately die while we remain.
Different life spans mean different species should not become close.
To be honest, I used to look down on and pity the shorter-lived humans and other races.
That was my mindset when Shaun was born.
I can’t even recall what caused me to adopt that view –
my parents, grandparents and sisters never felt that way, so perhaps I was unduly influenced by someone outside the family.
My perspective changed after an incident where my sister Tina accidentally nearly drowned the baby Shaun while bathing him.
When the Lyatt family visited the Drakkens, Tina offered to bathe Shaun to help his exhausted mother Namiela.
After Tina took Shaun to the bathroom, her scream suddenly rang out. When she emerged, the Shaun in her arms was red, limp, not breathing and his eyes that had just recently opened were now shut.
When I asked what happened, Tina explained she had placed Shaun in a baby bathtub floating in our large tub while she washed herself.
She meant to finish quickly, but the baby tub unfortunately drifted too close to the faucet, causing it to overturn.
The bath water was not hot enough to burn Shaun, but he became submerged and lost consciousness.
Making matters worse, Shaun’s mother and grandmother, as well as my own mother and grandmother, had all gone out to a famed restaurant for a meal. And the men, including our grandfather, were also away.
Not just Tina, the cause of the accident, but even my elder sister Sara was unusually flustered.
But my reaction at the time was extremely cold:
“It doesn’t matter what we do, they’ll just die before us anyway. Why panic? If he dies, he dies.”
However, I then recalled the emergency lifesaving techniques I learned from my ex-soldier mother Richelina. And I realized if this baby died, it could make my sister Tina a criminal.
I didn’t want Tina branded a criminal, so I had her call emergency services and Sara contact Shaun’s mother Namiela, while I performed the proper lifesaving procedures on Shaun myself.
Thanks to that, Shaun started breathing again.
He was then hospitalized, but made a full recovery with no lasting issues.
Soon after, Shaun’s whole Lyatt family and our entire Drakken family arrived at the hospital.
Then

Namiela and the other Lyatts came to me saying:
“Thank you Maya! Really, thank you so much!”
It was only natural, but:
“Thanks big sis Maya! If Shaun had died, I might never have recovered from the shock…”
Even Tina, the one responsible for the accident who got yelled at by our father, spanked by our mother, and lectured severely by our grandfather – even she who avoided becoming a criminal, just through gross negligence, thanked me.
But what surprised me was that my own parents and grandparents praised me as well.
They should understand well that humans have shorter lifespans than us.
So there was no need for them to lament if the shorter-lived Shaun had died then, nor to celebrate so much that he survived.
I had only acted to prevent my sister Tina from becoming a criminal.
And yet my parents and grandparents commended my actions.
It made me feel unexpectedly uncomfortable, so I left the hospital room.
Since I couldn’t just go home, I looked out the window in the visitors’ lounge.
“Oh, my. There you are. “
That’s when my wheelchair-bound grandmother approached me.
“Shaun should be discharged as scheduled tomorrow.”
I responded indifferently, “I see. That’s good.”
My grandmother then asked,
“Is something bothering you?”
I opened up to her about how humans have shorter lifespans than us, so they’ll eventually disappear. That I only saved Shaun to prevent my sister from becoming a criminal. That his death wouldn’t have been that big a deal.
After listening to what I had to say, my grandmother did not get angry.
“It is sad when we must part ways. But don’t you think it’s better to have loved and been loved by someone, rather than be hated or ignored? Regardless of the reason, your actions deserve gratitude.”
She said to me.
Back in Shaun’s room, as I watched over him, he smiled at me.
He likely didn’t recognize me as an individual – it was just a coincidence.
But for that moment, Shaun smiled at me, the person who thought “No big deal if he dies.”
With both families present, I broke down in tears.
I don’t know why.
But from that day on, I never again looked down on humans, and I was able to cherish Shaun wholeheartedly.
Seeing Shaun lying there now reminds me of that time, filling me with guilt.
But I must not forget this guilt.
It is my penance and warning.
For now, I can only pray for Shaun’s speedy recovery.
However, there are still many uncertain factors that prevent me from having any expectations.
First is Shaun’s recovery, which only time will tell, so I can only maintain the current situation.
As for his ship, belongings and cargo, unfortunately the ship itself was scrapped, but the cargo was delivered to the clients by GCPO, which should put Shaun’s mind at ease.
His furniture, household goods and food supplies that were on the ship are being stored at the spaceport.
We tried to take custody of the food supplies due to expiration dates, but were told we cannot receive them immediately unless we are relatives, spouses or were part of the crew.
For other relations, there is a 7-day processing period, which Tina and Sara were impatient about…it was quite a handful restraining them.
A little patience would be nice.
Though I too plan to indulge fully once they are returned –
after all, it is cooking made by my beloved brother and sister.
