“Hello?”
[Hey Shaun. You want to go out somewhere tomorrow?]
It was midway through summer vacation of my third year of middle school.
My friend Kevin Coleman had invited me to hang out.
Since losing both my parents in an accident last fall, I had become depressed and stopped going out to play as much.
I had given up on going to high school, and after graduating from middle school I planned to help my grandfather with his work and eventually become an independent cargo hauler.
I had actually intended to work with my grandfather this summer vacation too, but he told me [to enjoy this summer as a student] and wouldn’t let me help.
“But I’m not really in the mood,”
Kevin’s excuse for inviting me to play with him was.
His excuse was, [A true friend invites his friends who can’t hang out anymore starting next year as much as possible while he still can. I’ve already finished my summer homework too.]
By the way,
this Kevin guy had put off his summer homework until the very last day four times in elementary school.
Each time, he would call me over after I got back from helping my grandfather with his work, and make me help him finish it late into the night.
So on the entrance ceremony day of our first middle school trimester, I showed up at Kevin’s house carrying study supplies
“We’re doing your summer homework starting now. Don’t think you’ll be let off until it’s finished.”
and threatened him
Of course I did mine too.
Kevin tried getting his mom to make up some excuse for him, but apparently she agreed with my proposal when it came to Kevin’s summer homework habits.
Obviously my family had already given their consent, so Kevin had no way out.
That’s why Kevin had no choice but to start on his summer homework then and there, and I really didn’t let him off until it was complete.
Maybe because he was able to fully enjoy that spartan summer homework regimen, he’s asked me to do the same the following year, and again this year.
Thanks to that, he’s been able to keep his cool this whole time.
But there’s something he has that I don’t.
“Alright alright, I’ll go out with you.”
[Awesome. So where should we…?]
“But aren’t you worried about entrance exams this year?”
That’s right, unlike me who isn’t going on to high school, Kevin has that wall of entrance exams ahead of him.
Yet that guy just said nonchalantly,
[Nah, taking a break is important too! It’ll be fine, it’ll be fine! Besides, spending time with a friend I can’t hang out with after this year is more important than my entrance exams! So where should we go?]
Clearly flustered, he kept pushing to go out.
“You invited me and didn’t even decide where we’re going?”
[If I picked somewhere you didn’t want to go, that’d be no good right?]
“I guess you have a point.”
[Well then how about the Cocktail Pool if it’s somewhere nearby?]
“Yeah it is close by and just right for this weather.”
[Got it, 8:30 am tomorrow at the Azelonas Station then.]
“Okay, and don’t be late.”
[I know already.]
I can tell Kevin is trying to be considerate of me.
So tomorrow I’ll try my best to have fun.
But the next morning, an unexpected situation arose.

8:25 am the next day in front of the station.
I arrived at Azelonas Station right on time, but in front of me was Shaun
” Oh. You weren’t late today.”
Shaun dressed in usual sneakers, jeans, and t-shirt albeit inexplicably in the form of a girl.
“Hey! What’s going on here?”
“When I woke up this morning my [time of the month] had started, so I had no choice but to get ready as a girl.”
Apparently the unique biological cycle of the Sumerian people had begun for him, which is why he showed up as a girl.
But Shaun has never come to a recreational pool like this as a girl before, even if he has at the school pool. What’s up with that?
“Oh…I see, can’t be helped then.”
In any case, we couldn’t just stand around, so Shaun and I boarded the bus headed straight for the [Cocktail Pool] from Azelonas Station.
The [Cocktail Pool], properly known as the Blue Sky Garden Water Amusement Park, is an entertainment sports facility located in Salfrupp, the stellar capital of the planet Orlangea. The surface portion is a flat circular building 100 meters in diameter and 5 meters tall, containing an indoor parking lot, bus terminal, ticket counters, elevator hall, and more inside.
The elevator hall is in the center of the surface building, with six anti-gravity elevators in operation.
Going through a transparent tube from the elevator hall, you arrive at the floating aerial amusement facility 150 meters above the surface, kept aloft by an anti-gravity system.
The facility itself is an inverted triangular shape about 30 meters in size, with the topmost area reaching 180 meters high and spanning around 47,000 square meters.
Here you’ll find a lazy river, water slides, a wave pool, a children’s water park area, a water shooter area, beach volleyball courts, an official 50-meter competition pool with small oxygen tanks for an underwater maze, various food courts, and more.
The bottom half is occupied by the anti-gravity systems, while the upper half contains staff rooms, offices, changing rooms, a valuables cloak, infirmary, security room, storage, and an emergency evacuation shuttle boarding area.
From afar it resembles the shape of a cocktail glass, which is where the nickname “Cocktail Pool” comes from.
Playing off this nickname, the operating company has even adopted an illustration of a girl inside a cocktail glass as their mascot, and cocktail drinks are served at the park’s food establishments.
Not that us minors have ever ordered any, of course.
Anyway, after arriving at the bus terminal we got in line at the ticket counters before opening to wait our turn. That’s when I overheard some murmurs:
“That silver-haired, blue-eyed girl…high school age maybe? Pretty cute, wouldn’t you say?”
“Oh yeah, I’d love to get to know her better.”
No doubt they were talking about Shaun.
Especially in girl form,
Shaun comes off looking quite mature.
“So that guy next to her is her boyfriend?”
“As if a cutie like that would go for a guy like him? Probably just a cousin or something.”
And of course, the usual disdainful words were directed at me beside him.
If Shaun had been in male form, the murmurs would have come from women instead with less disdain aimed at me.
By the time we made it through the line and purchased tickets, it was opening time so we took the elevator up to the facility.
At the entrance we exchanged our tickets for wristbands –
these not only serve as locker keys, but can also have information loaded onto them, naturally designed to be waterproof.
From there it was to the changing rooms to swap into swimsuits before heading to the pool area.
As we waited near the pool entrance, I hear a voice saying.
“Yo!”
Shaun appeared in a bright red bikini with her long white hair in a ponytail.
“Whoa! Red? Really?”
“Can’t be helped! With these big you-know-whats my sisters just had to tease me by only leaving this for me to wear…”
“Oh…I see, can’t be helped then I guess…”
I had expected her to pick a blue or green suit more her style, but if it was her sisters’ idea it made sense.
“Well then, why don’t we hit the water slides first?”
“Yeah, let’s go!”
